Joint Pain/ Zoloft

Hello everyone I have been on Zoloft for 4 months now and upon taking this medication the first week I noticed my fingers were sore in the joint area. I thought it was just a side effect of the medication and would go away within 2 weeks or so. Well it did so that's why I never reported the bee stinging pain in my hands and fingertips in the beginning. Everything was fine for about 2 months but just recently I have gotten the same joint pain in my fingers, wrists, elbows, both knees. Excruciating pain. I am only in my 40's so the thought of arthritis went out the door. Also I live in the Southeast US so warm climate. I have always been a very active person. Never had a desk job in my life. The only thing I can attribute this debilitating joint pain, swelling, and pain to is Setraline the generic for Zoloft. I stopped taking this medication a month ago and I am still experiencing these issues. I am on 2400mg of Ibuprofen a day plus 20mg of Valium and yet I wake up in pain every morning. Stiffness, limping to walk, brushing my teeth & hair as well as dressing myself has become a real task and takes me twice as long. I am sharing this with anyone who can provide me with answers or give me some information or recommendations. Has anyone else experienced this type of pain??? So tired of being in pain & taking pain medication which after a week should have made the swelling go down. I will stop now as my fingers are cramping again like an 87 year old woman??? So confused!!! Thank you for taking the time out to read this.

Have you had your thyroid checked?

Hi yes Katie my doctor ran a series of tests on me and they all came back normal with the exception of the inflammation of my joints which never existed until I started the Setraline/ Zoloft. He took me off it a month ago and told me try to ride out the withdrawal symptoms which have practically made me bedridden and dependent on 2400mg of Ibuprofen. I sleep with a heating pad. My fingertips feel like they have been stung by bees. I have never been in so much pain. Praying the side effects & withdrawals with disappear with the next couple of weeks. My doctor put it down to the medication that caused this. I know it was! I have never had these kind of issues. I have been very physically strong, athletic, and this medication has destroyed me at this moment. Please keep me in your prayers. Also any reccomendations or suggestions are welcome. I was only taking 25mg a day.

Just thought I'd ask! Thyroid disease is so common nowadays. But unfortunately I can't offer any help with the inflammation you're currently dealing it. Definitely will keep you in my prayers. I have been on Zoloft for four years and I haven't had any problems. Drink plenty of water to ride out the withdrawls! I'm sure you will feel better within the next month!

Hi I hope you feel better soon. I've been on Sertraline for almost a year and for the past couple of months have been suffering aching joints - especially when waking - I'm so stiff in the mornings - I hobble downstairs - and even have pain in my finger joints, it hurts to clench my fists. I have had blood tests for everything which have come back normal. I am very active, Dr suggests it could be the menopause as I am 53. My back has felt painful too. I have been taking 50mg I am going to stop taking them . What's scary is that even though you have stopped taking them you are still suffering. I pray you get relief & I'm so sorry you're in so much pain.

Over the past several years, I've been on (at various times) Methotrexate, Hydroxychloroquine, Enbrel and Humira with relief from pain in my hands only when I take Prednisone. Last month. my Rheumatologist prescribed Leflunomide for me to try, but I had actually not been too bad off when I met with her in July. For some reason, my scalp started itching, so after a week on Leflunomide, we stopped it to see if that might have caused the itching. The itching has continued. Not sure yet the cause of that, but I'm on no arthritis meds at this time.

It was just a fluke that I have also tapered off Sertraline over the past 2 months and am now feeling the best I've felt in years. So, I believe that my hands had started feeling better before I met with my rheumatologist because I was in the process of tapering off Sertraline, but didn't make the connection at the time. Fingers are still a little stiff, but I can make a fist with both hands now with no arthritis meds! I was on a very low dose of sertraline for past 3 years since retiring in 2018, so I thought perhaps it was time to get off it and high blood pressure meds entirely. I'm so glad I did get off the sertraline, and am taking half of the amlodipine for HBP.

When tapering off the sertraline, I did experience about 2 weeks in July of being tired and aching all over as if I was coming down with something (negative Covid test, by the way).

I've read that sertraline can cause itching/rash, but I haven't seen anything about going off of it causing itching. any thoughts on that would be appreciated!

Hi I feel your pain I can relate to your symptoms. I was on 50mg and also debilitated me similarly. I have gotten so many test done on me but everything comes back normal. I just wonder if things do actually improve because I like this 2 months now with no improvement and hardly anyone believes me that Sentraline can do this. I hope you get better. You're not alone on this. Be strong.

After 6 weeks on Zoloft/Setraline, building up dose slowly, I also now have nightmare pain in knees. Suddenly I can't walk and legs giving way as if i have debilitating arthritis. Bizarre. Also Horrible itchy skin.

I had built up slowly from 25 mcg to 50 mcg. Its made me bed bound for first half of day. I have stopped this medicine now, and I only hope these side-effects go away as soon as possible.

Good morning, I'm not sure I'll get a reply to my message. I've had all these symptoms. severe pain, unable to move. I'm 45, I work out, run and eat healthy. ive been taking Sertraline for 7 months and over last two weeks have become almost immobile. It started in my feet and now all my joints are in agony. I can get going eventually but the pain is there all the time. Did anyone have a conclusion to this? Did coming off Sertraline sort it? How long did it take? Fingers crossed someone will see this. Im in desperate need of help. Kind Regards Hev

I am experiencing the same pain right now. I've been on 25mg for about 5 months. I had all kinds of reactions. It started with the foggy brain, and then the headache, and I even got a UTI and urinary incontinence. Then everything seem to settle down. But now, the last two weeks I have burning pain in my knees, my elbows, my ankles, my wrist, the back of my arms and my legs feel like they’re prickly and on fire. I was hesitant to stop, because I just assumed it was going to be another type of side effect

that I should wait out. However, based on what I’ve read here I’m going to go ahead and taper off. i’m going to try Prozac fingers crossed.
