Joint Replacement Facts

I'm curious and have been doing some research on replacement facts...

This link from Cleveland Hospital mentions approx 240,000 hip replacements are performed in the U.S. yearly.... There are 300Million+ population in the U.S.

COULD NOT POST LINK...WILL TRY AGAIN.

I was talking to an online friend in B.C. Canada and her "mum" had a posterior and is doing good, but I read there are some 30,000 hip replacements in Canada per year, with a population of 30Million+.

The Anterior is not done much in Canada but I read that it being done in Montreal, how true this is I don't know.

Does anyone have any "clues" on which country in Europe has the MOST replacements done annually?

Forget the 3rd world countries, they are lucky to be barely alive...sad but so true.

I had a link to post, but it's not posting, so I'll try it again.....

I don't think they let you post links...you can give some general information and we can google it from that..I've noticed people have tried to give links to various sites but the forum always comes back and says it deleted the message because of the link, which they can't have or it assumes the forum endorses it, etc. etc. etc.

Hello Joy - I am a fellow hippie, now 5 weeks post TLHR in England; I'm 48 and was distraught I needed THR my age (because of oa caused probably by bone growth causing excessive wear in the joint. Good news is that the other hip looks ok for the moment!

I have a leaflet from the charity Arthritis Research UK that says over 70,000 people have hip replacement surgery in England and Wales every year, and rising. There is also The National Joint Registry for England, Wales and N Ireland, which records details of joint replacement ops to monitor the results of surgery and protect patient safety. They provide a host of info to both surgeons and patients about - quoting from their leaflet - different implants, performance of implants and surgeons, etc.Web is njrcentre dot org dot uk, where they make a public and patient guide available, although I haven't looked at it myself yet.

Hi Joy, just remembered something else my consultant told me. In England surgeons also use data from Sweden and Australia, where apparently there are also high volumes of hip replacements. For some reason they don't tend to compare with US data; I get the impression that's because the private funding nature of healthcare in the US creates a different environment for data comparisons (just my guess) - my consultant was a bit critical of the high volume of Anterior surgeries in the US, suggesting it was good PR for the hospitals and surgeons (speed, etc) but he quoted a figure of 30% subsequent problems like muscle detachment and nerve damage, which don't get such high press reports.
