Joint replacement on big toe

Hi,

I am having toe surgery Monday on my big toe.  I am getting a joint replacement or a metal plate of some sort and a spur shaved off.  I've only been to the doctor once and it was an easy decision because my pain is so bad and I can't believe I put it off.  I'm not worried so much about the procedure, but I want to know what to expect after. How bad is the pain??? How long??? Do they give you sufficent pain meds?  I have a spur on the other toe too, but not as much arthritis so does anyone recomment getting the easier surgery to remove that spur asap after this one to keep it from getting worse?  Any advice would be helpful. I have some crutches incase I need them. How soon can I drive? It's my left foot so it shouldn't be a problem.  Thanks, Lori

    Hi Lori

Do you know the name of your procedure? It sounds like some type of bunion operation,  but not one I am familiar with.

I think generally foot surgery will require you to keep your foot elevated for a couple of weeks at the very least and maybe up to six weeks.  I think everybody heals and recovers differently with some able to get around and drive much sooner than others.  Your consultant should be able to provide you with a guide to post operative recovery explaining when you will be able to get about and drive again. I have heard of people driving after a week but understand that this must be agreed with your car insurance people.

Pain seems to effect people very differently, but the best advice is to elevate the foot as much as possible and use ice to reduce and sooth any swelling. It makes a difference how high your foot is elevated.  It should be above your chest for the best results.  It seems that people who overdo it get more pain and a slower recovery, but every one is different.

Good much with procedure and try and be a little more exact about the type of procedure you are having and more people may be able to answer your questions better than I can.

I had big toe joint replacement and spur removal at the beginning of May! and realise now that it is a BIG procedure which takes a long time to recover from. After 3 months  I can still only wear open toed footwear and walk short distances. Also still get a lot of heat and swelling by evening time which can be alleviated by elevating the foot and applying ice. It is so so important not to try to do too much weight bearing too soon. I found that going swimming helped, but the recovery time is a long haul so be prepared!
