jones fracture

I had been writing but, am excited that 4 weeks after my screw was inserted for Jones Fracture 5th metatarsal, I am now walking in my hard soled boot. I wasted the first 4 weeks trying to see if it would heal without surgery. I know now, that these fractures recur and surgery is the most painless best option. 4 weeks non weight bearing, 4 in boot then good to go! I am so upset that I literally wasted a month before surgery. Never again. And, I have absolutely no pain walking in my boot. I do love this foot and ankle orthopedist.

I am 2 weeks out from having 2 screws put in for a Jones Fracture.  My doctor does not want me to do any weight bearing until the week of 10/10.  Before the surgery, he told me to take at least 6 weeks off of work since I teach young children.  I use a scooter to get around now.  How long did you all take off work?  I probably needed longer because of my job...  Now, I am trying to move it around some.  It isn't too much pain but lots of tingling that doesn't feel great and some occasional shooting pains after I try to move things around like the doctor told me to do.

Now I see you do have a scooter. They are a life savor. So did your doc order you a bone stimulator? They encourge blood supply to the area. Good luck. Because my fracture was caused by stress and non displaced I waited 4 weeks NWB. Waste of time! Surgery helps that union. Good luck!!!

I didn't have surgery but after 10 weeks bone had started to heal and I was told to walk in boot with cru ches after cut back to 1 cruch after another week wear shoes and use two cruches and work back to no cruches after 3 weeks. I went to phisio for 14 week and next week should be my last week still not walking as fast as normal for me but walking 3 miles a day.

He hasn't said anything about that.  I had the screws put in and when I got the big dressing off after surgery, I think that it looked like it was starting to heal too.  I am good about calcium and take D3 already, so hopefully that will help too.

Did you have to take a lot of time off of work?  I am doing exercises right now on the hour, so my doctor said only time will tell if I need PT - I am only 2 weeks after surgery now.  I am hoping not to need PT or a bone stimulator.  This chat is the first that I have even heard of that.

I work with my husband we run taxis and buses so driving was out.so I did the books the house after the 10 weeks .started walking slowly at first now can walk 3 miles a day still slower than I normally walk I found the phisio great he told you exactly what you should do I had a stiff ankle and had to get back walking property with his help I believe I got more help from phisio than doctor.

I am hoping to be able to walk at least a little and drive at 6 - the doctor had said 6-8 weeks...  I did have surgery, so I am hoping that moves the process faster.  I am doing the exercises now and am hopeful...

My doctor said surgery really is the best option for a good union and no recurrance.

Thanks- after seeing my xray, I can't imagine that a boot would have been enough.  From everything that I have read, surgery helps from having it happen over and over again.

You Are correct! I wasted 4 weeks before surgery. Mine was a stress fracture non displaced. After 4 weeks about 50 to 60% healed. We "doc and I) decided to put a screw in since I am 67, ride horses and ballroom dance. Also hike, etc.

My doctor told me that I was "young" (48), so he wanted it to be strong.  I have an active lifestyle, so he said surgery was my option.

Ha and mine said I was "old" and have an active life style. Most riders put that foot back in a stirrup then fracture recurs over time. A friend who is my age and anrider recurred a Year later. Ugh

Good thing you had the surgery or it would happen over and over again!  That is why I did it too - odds are I would trip like I did again!
