Jones Fracture-----78 years old

I broke my 5th metatarsal bone 4 weeks ago.  I walked on it a week

and was very painful, but not much swelling or bruising, so did   not

go to doctor until 8th day.  At that time, he put me in tall boot and

crutches or walker.  I cheated a little during this time, not having

someone to wait on me all the time.  I returned to doctor yesterday

and she told me is was extremely important to stay off of it, except

for showering and it could take 8--12 weeks or longer.  I have complete trust in the doctor but my son thinks this is an overkill

for a cracked foot bone.  He wants me to change doctors. I do not

do well on crutches and my house is not built well for a walker.  I

am depressed and do not know what to do.

Stay off it! Bones start the healing process between 8-12 weeks it doesn't mean healed and if you are 78 years old you are in a range for delayed healing. Trust me 8-12 weeks safe is better then surgery and a bone graft down the road.

Do you have a walking boot cast? if you don't like crutches I have seen leg rollers on wheels at medical supply stores.

Yes I agree you must stay off your foot. Non weight bearing for at least 6-8 weeks. I,m on week 12 of a jones fracture and it does get better but you must in the early stages rest your foot. Good luck

I agree, you must stay off that foot, I ended up having to have surgery two weeks after I broke mine and was 14 weeks before I could start walking on it. Now at eight months it's still aches if I do too much but at least I'm walking without a stick, though I do limp a bit.
