HI June leg and feet swelling is normal it can last for months, try to put your feet up. I have had two hip replacements over the last six months first one was in December and second in April mine still swell, and feet can be very painful some people use ice but its quite normal hope you have a speedy recovery best wishes Cyndey

With my original hip replacement and the revision of it twenty years later I did not have the symptoms you are experiencing. Hope things improve soon. Richard

It's right as cyndey says but if you are worried then it costs nothing to ask for advice from your GP or surgeon.

I have had mine done yet but I'm clued up on what to expect as I am on crutches after a hip fracture and know all about the swelling especially when it's warm but I'm not knowledgeable regarding it hurting when touched, when all is said and done they have messed around with the bone and muscles and it will take weeks /months to heal so swelling will definitely be some that will be classed as "normal" but don't worry needlessly ask the question and keep it raised above heart level and also do your exercises every day and as often as you where told

hi June. I had my RTHR 6 weeks ago and at abt 2 weeks the swelling to both legs /feet kicked in. because of the swelling it was very hard to move especially going ip down stairs. the best thing as others have said is to elevate your legs . I found an article that sd your ankle needs to be in line with your hip and certainly now 4 weeks later my feet are still slightly swollen but the rest is fine. walking also helps which is a catch 22 till some of the swelling reduces. I sit more often with 1 leg up than with both feet on the floor. think the main advice is to NOT put a pillow behind your knees assume this changes the position of the hip.

the main thing is it will go. keep on with any painkillers you're taking atm so you can keep moving. it will hurt as well to the touch as it's almost like an over filled bag of fluid. I found I'd put almost a stone in weight on which I knew was impossible based on what I'd been eating and once I'd started to elevate my legs better I lost 8lb over 2 days and gradually lost the rest now.

anyway good luck .it does get better 😃

I was in hospital last year with acute gallstones and altho I wasnt eating when I came home I'd gained weight. the nurses sd I would find that because of the iv fluids I'd had but in time it would go and it did. we will have all had iv fluids in hospital as well but my understanding of the healing process of the OP is to swell so look on it as a positive thing as well:) it will go even if some days you feel all you're doing is weeing lol 😃

Hi. I have had my full hip op on right side 7 weeks ago .I have no pain from my hip . some days are better than others ,but I have been have having pain in my ankle and my knee which is swollen usually at night time . I am down to a walking stick . I also have pain in my back . how long has people's recovery been . my job is very strenuous. work has asked me when I will be back .

Best to use two crutches until you don't need them to walk with a good strong. balanced gait. Walking with one is likely to result in your body being distorted and having back pain and pain elsewhere.

      Cheers, Richard

I had some swelling for the first couple of weeks. My doc had me use compression stockings as soon as I was out of surgery. You really should for safety sake talk to your doctor as they do worry about blood clots after hip surgery.

I had left hip revision one month ago. At about 10 days post op my feet and legs swelled up like balloons. Doctor prescribed water pills and after about a week, my swelling was gone. I sympathize with the pain you are feeling. I actually felt as if my legs were going to burst open. Follow your doctors suggestions and it will go away. Hang in. It does get better.

Hi, I am a month out and within the past couple days the swelling has gone down. I was also very swollen and black and blue. I couldnt even wear shoes. It will get better. wear compression socks that go over the knee not the ones that stop under. Also alot of ankle pumps and walk around the house often. When resting ice and sit with legs even at hips. First two weeks are the worst but then it all starts to get better:)
