Just been diagnosed with a VERY overactive thyroid...

Hi everyone, I'm Morven, I'm 26 and live just outside Glasgow.

Just to say thanks for the forum - it's so helpful.

I was confirmed to have a very overactive thyroid yesterday following blood tests by my GP - T3 <0.05 and T4 >100 (labs stop measuring after 100...). If I'm honest I've been having symptoms since late November 2007, although I've been trying to ignore them. My GP suspected hyperactive thyroid last week when I keeled over at work with gastroenteritis.

I've been prescribed 20mg Carbimazole once daily, and 80 mg Propranolol once daily. My GP is also referring me to an Endocrinologist and also to a diagnostic imaging specialist to have a look at the goitre on my neck, both appointments hopefully next week. Thank goodness for medical insurance, otherwise it could be around 4months on the NHS in Scotland for an Endo appointment - the GP says while the levels are very high the medication could keep me OK until then, but says it's just as well we have BUPA insurance so I can be seen as soon as possible because levels are so high.

I was wondering if anyone with similar figures and doses could let me know how soon they felt a bit better? I'm worried about side effects, like feeling down - I'm a bit like that just now with the tiredness and hot flushes. Also the possible weight gain too - I was hoping if I watch what I eat I'll be OK, or will that not work.

Thanks in advance, and I hope everyone's doing well.

Morven

i was diagnosedApparently the Ama with a very overactive thyroid. like you of the scale. Nhs appoinment would have been 4 months. so paid to go privately. started of with 60mg carbizamole a day after three weeks was feeling better and my number on the scale was 72.4. my consultant dropped my dose to 40mg a day and another three weeks later by number for tft was 24.7. My dose was dropped to 20 mg and after another three weeks he dropped my dose to 10mg as number on scale was 13.4. Am due to go again on 26th August 2008 when I will probably be put on a maintenance dose of 5mg. a day. I was on Amioderone for a heart problem and apparently that medication caused my thyroid problem. Hope this helps and that you are soon feeling better.

i meant to add to my reply that I lost about 2 stone in weight even though eating everything and anything. when my levels came down I reverted to sensible eatimg and my weight is stable. I did get hot flushes ,tremors and feeling depressed, but for me got back to normal when my tft levels where approaching lower levels. if fact i was feeling better in myself before the first three weeks were up. but I was on a very high dose of Carbizmole (60mg)i do not think your gp can proscribe that level.
