Just been diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa.

Just had my recent abscess drained and have walked out of the hospital today. I have suffered with abscess for at least 12 years. I never even knew this this disease existed until yesterday when the doctor at the hospital told me what it was. I had always been told by doctors that it just one of these things I am prone to.. So upset that it hasn't been picked up on before. I'm hoping to be referred to a dermatologist, has any one else been refered??

The doctor told me that it can be helped with a long term course of pills as this disease is with us for the rest of our lives (we lucky people).  Can we get a Nhs exemption card?? I am completely in the dark. After spending so much money through the years on washes, pills, bandages, creams, solutions and paste.  Feel frustrated but relieved that I have a little light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi Danni. I wish you luck with the dermatologist. I suffered for many years before diagnosing myself through googling on the internet and later to be confirmed by the dermatologist. I tried various antibiotics with great success for a few years then I think I became immune to them. Long story short I was referred to a plastic surgeon, but that, for me anyway, was just a step too far. At present they come and go, they're painful and unsightly but they're here to stay so I just put up with them. I don't know about an exemption card, I once asked my doctor if it was classed as a disability only to be told an emphatic "no".  This same doctor led me to believe for many years that this horrible illness was due to poor hygiene. I bathe every night and shower every morning so what more could I do.  I'm an extremely clean person.

Thank you for your replies.. I have been given a 3 month trail of antibiotics.. Luckily I now have a new doctor who knew exactly what I was talking about, hurray!!!

Even for the doctor to recognise it is a massive step for me.. I'm currently still on pills from the hospital so I don't know if they will work or not..

I do believe that maybe a natural solution is possible, I'm going to look into seeing about foods that I am allergic to.. See how it goes if I cut these foods out of my diet. Can't hurt, so much processed foods in the word now. It's my belief that this may be a cause also.. I don't feel that I am not over weight or have a poor diet or that I don't  keep fit.. So I do feel it's something that I may be fuelling my body with on a daily basis..I hope it's not eggs and this would be a disaster ;-)
