How much L-carnitine do you take daily?

I started on 1,000 mg daily but cut it back when my TSH rose. I have cut back to 500 mg daily and will be cutting down to 250 mg as soon as I buy that dosage. The capsules are 500 mg each. You need to monitor your blood work closely and adjust your dose of carnitine and methimazole as your TSH rises.

I contacted Sigma Tau, the company that manufactures L-Carnitine and the company that sponsored the studies that Dr. Benvenga did with hyperthyroidism and L-Carnitine in Italy in the early 2000's. I spoke to the medical director who said he was going to Italy in mid-February and is going to present my experience with Acetyl-L-Carnitine to colleagues there. I sure hope this leads to clinical trials with acetyl-L-Carnitine and that they learn more about how it can benefit people with Graves disease. They seemed very very interested.

I know I have posted on this Board before about my experience with Acetyl-L-Carnitine and physicians especially are reluctant to endorse it because there are no significant studies or publications on this other than the one I mentioned before but that was with regular L-Carnitine.

I believe if others try it and have the same experiences that I did, that people on high doses of meds will be able to reduce their meds if they add the Acetyl-L-Carnitine.

I would love to hear from anyone who tries acetyl-L-Carnitine and gets positive results in the normalization of all of their thyroid blood tests and the alleviation of their troublesome symptoms.
