Just been prescribed trimethoprim

Hi

I've just been prescribed trimethoprim for UTI and after reading all the posted I'm so afraid of taking them. I had a reaction to nothisterone just over a year ago and it was not very nice at all an I don't want to feel that ever again. But if I don't take these tablets then I'm worried I'll still have the UTI. Is it worth asking my doctor for an alternative??

Very Worried.

Don't be worried! While all drugs have possible side effects the risk of side effects with trimethoprim is very low. It is used every day by thousands of women with urinary tract infections without any problem. What you are seeing on th forum are comments from the few unlucky people who have unfortunately suffered with adverse reactions. (and I say this without wanting to trivialise their experiences) Unfortunately what you don't see on here are the many people who take their 3 day course with no problems and with successful resolution of their symptoms.

    Hope this is useful

I am curious as to why,in a reply to another posting, someone has mentioned a 3 day course of this drug (?) I was given a 7 day course (200mg) and it made me feel very ill.....I am still not feeling 100% several weeks later. I was prescribed this drug by a Practice Nurse at my local surgery after she had tested my urine sample and told me there was quite alot of blood present. The nurse ignored the fact that I had quite severe pain in my left kidney and I am now pretty sure that this drug should not be given to patients with a kidney infection.

    Hi

my perscription was for a 3 day course. I've still not taken them cos Im still worried about a reaction. Im thinkin of going for a herbal alternative. Does anyone have any experiences of those?

was given this drug exactly 1 week ago and at end of the week I started coming up in spots. Thought I had the measles. This morning there were large blotches and spots down to my toes. the skin on my face feels so tight I could rip it off. Doctor reckons Im allergic to this drug, if I'd know I'd never have taken it. Have to take antihistimines for the next 30 days.

I question the differing periods of treatment - I have been prescribed (for the first time and I have had chronic UTIs in the past) a 3 day course of Trimethoprim. I fear that this will not do the trick and having ended up in emergency because of my UTI's being resistant to most antibiotics and being persistent, I hope that this 3 day course is able to kill the very painful UTI I have right now (it was mild they said with a cursory dip test). It seems others are talking about 7 days and 10 days and even 2 years (as a preventative therapy I assume). Does 3 days work ? I am a bit itchy but I don't mind, I want the pain and infection to go away. I also question prescribing this med for cystitis because isn't that different - i.e. not a bacterial infection that can only be treated by antibiotics? Lastly, I wonder if some side effect are from the drugs action to prevent folic acid production which is vital to feeling normal - maybe people who are a bit low on B vitamins have a tougher time with this drug - also it mentions anaemia as a side effect (related to the folic acid production prevention) and anaemia can cause cramping, headaches weakness and make you feel very cold. I wonder if we should be prescribed B vitamins with folic acid with this antibiotic - funnily enough when I was in Pakistan of all places they always told us to take B-vitamins when we were prescribed antibiotics. Any comments, advice, input? And I will post results, after consuming my 3 day course.
