Just Curious

Hi everyone, I wanted to know well I was curious to know if trichomoniasis in men go away? I was told that once the male passes the infection he no longer has it anymore. I also heard from a doctor that if a male has it, it clears up on its own. Is this true?

    Dear sue,

You ask a very important question about TV, which is the commonest non-viral STD in the world! I don't think enough is known about the natural history of TV in men to be confident that the infection will simply "go away" without treatment. This was the view maybe 25-30 years ago, but newer more sensitive molecular tests have shown that many more men who are contacts of women with TV may harbour the infection without showing any symptoms. And I don't think a study has been conducted looking at how long it takes for these men to clear their infection using these sensitive tests.

So in practical terms, if a woman has TV diagnosed it's important to get their (male) partner tested and treated if they want to avoid the risk of being re-infected. Assuming that their partner can simply clear the infection on their own is not an option.
