Just Diagnosed and confused!

I have today been diagnosed with DVT, specialist said that surgery and medication are not helpful therefore recommends the following:
6 months on blood thinning medication.
6 weeks bed rest with legs lifted up, no exercise.
Everywhere on the web the advice is no bedrest and to exercise as much as I can.
Who's right? I'm confused.

Without knowing the full extent of your DVT I wouldn't want to give you undue advice however I have a chronic DVT and my specialists advice was to do as much exercise as I felt comfortable doing. So its probably about listening to your body and deciding at the time if you think you would benefit from a bit of light exercise (eg a walk around the block). I started slow like that and 6 months down the track am able to go for hour long brisk walks. Good luck and hope you start to feel better soon.

Firstly I'm not a qualified doctor however my daughter had a DvT 3 years ago . Sadly she was in FRANCE with no recourse to new treatment bring offered in London Mr Black who works in St Guys and Thomas offers removal of clots as well as pioneering treatment for blocked veins post DvT. It will depend upon how long it has been in situ of course
In terms of whether to exercise, my daughter had a very extensive clot from her lower calf to her abdomen . Every expert told her that she could have very severe post thrombolytic problems. However a local physiotherapist advised her to exercise as much as she could so she went swimming every day, walked on an elliptical trainer which was lent to us, raised her leg at night to help with the swelling and wore her stockings religiously. She also walked every day
She managed with this regime and a year's blood thinners to restore function to most of her blood vessels and to increase the peripheral system to be able to compensate She still occasionally has pain and swelling but she has astounded many including Mr Black who she did eventually get to see but whose stents she did not require given her own recovery.
in light of this, I would definitely seek a second opinion at the very least and do some more research !
Hope it all goes well

I had my extensive clot washed away with an anjiojet under local anesthetic and a stent put in, it was highly successful but not many hospitals offer it, I was at Stoke Mandeville. They would not discharge me from hospital until I was active and able to walk the length of the ward which rather dispells the bed rest theory, I was told to "listen to my body" and do as much exercise as I felt comfortable with. I was also told not to stand or sit with legs down, either be walking or legs raised. Before the DVT I walked daily and within 4 months of my being hospitalised was back on 3 mile daily walks.

I have just been seen this morning by a different Doctor, they are keeping me in hospital for at least one more day, this doctor says no bed rest!!, but surgical stockings and 6 months blood thinning medication.
This is good news, and backs up the treatment that is suggested on various web sites.
Why two different ways forward I do not know.
