Had this pain and swelling before and was told it was IBS and to take some buscapan tablets. New doctor and within minutes if describing my symptoms diagnosed diverticulitis and was give antibiotics and blood tests done. Next day doctor called and confirmed that blood tests confirmed his diagnosis. He told me to eat a high fibre diet but have read liquids only for a few days. Any advice please?

Yes liquids for at least a day. Then sift foods.  My experience is no fiber or hard to digest fruits, veggies and meats  for a month. Then gradually add but I do not eat raw veggies or fruit with skins.  Seeds a no for me .  A probiotic is a good idea to help get your system back to normal and don’t get constipated if possible.  I take Miralax to stay open.  Good luck😘

Linda I am unaware that a blood test can confirm diverticulitis it can confirm bacterial infection You need cat scan or colonoscopy please forgive me if I am wrong After a liquid diet for diverticulitis I do not think a high fiber diet is a option There are very knowledgeable people on this forum who have had this disease for much longer than I have I'm sure they will give you some sound advice

Hi thanks for your response, the blood tests were CRP, ESR, FBC, Liver profile and renal and electrolytes. The doctor said that those confirmed his diagnosis but I had to call him back in two days and confirm I am feeling better.

Yes Questran sachets its a fibre sort of drink its a miricle for me My consultant put me on it You can mix with skimmed milk or water or apple juice I was on it before in 2017 but now back on it again as I had 6 months of no pain fulishly I stopped taking above and then had a really bad flare up lasted months so now back on it Lesson learnt. Buscapan helps very little . White bread a no no for me after a sandwich look like four months pregnant  Also find hot food or hot  drink causes me pain not long after in the toilet Diarthoea. Coffee a laxitive and worse than tea pplus fizzy drink. Plus dont eat nuts or sweetcorn can get stuck in intestine the pouches and cause flare ups Think you should have an endescopy or gastro investigations. Doctor may say derverticulitus but you  still need to know not IBD other I dont smoke never have and I dont drink either so seems bit unfair ended up with this problem .I have no gallbladder either op in 1992 keyhole and now get what they call bile dumping in too my stomach as no bile duct. This can cause severe dirrhoea thats why Im on Questran powder sachets .

      Hi Melekie

I don’t smoke or drink either but I do have arthritis and been on naproxen for years and also have Trigeminal Neuralgia and on Amitriptyline so I think that hadn’t helped. I am seeing a rheumatologist in a couple of months to see what type of arthritis it is.

I was diagnosed with complicated D a week and a day ago. Was told the blood tests are “indicators” but the confirmation happens with CT scan.   You should ask your Dr. about a CT

      Hi mike

It’s taken over a year to refer me to a rheumatologist and I still have a few months till the appointment date.   I can imagine how long /getting go to refer me for ct scan.  At my age all I get told is that it’s all menopause related symptoms. It was only when I got a MRI done privately and they saw the results did the act.

only ct scan or colonoscopy can diagnose diverticulitis. blood test only shows if you have an infection or inflamation in youre body.

And blood tests may also miss an infection. its not fool proof unfortunately.
