Just diagnosed with ibs

Hi, I’m a 16 year old female and I was diagnosed recently with ibs. I had been going through the diarrhea phase of it for a very long time, whenever I had a bm it was normal or it was dirrahea. Back in July I had to go to the hospital because I wasn’t able to have a bm for over a week. When I followed up with my doctor she did some imaging but then after told me I had ibs. I’m still in the constipation phase, I’m having bowel movements most days, but some days it’s very hard to go or I’m unable to go. She told me to take a senna tablet once a day, which most days seems to help me but other days it doesn’t. I also have constant bloating in my stomach which is really painful. What can I do to fix this for awhile?

Hi sorry to hear about your IBS. My mother and I always used Glycerin Suppositories for constipation. BUT, because your 16 please check with your doctor. They are harmless and non-addictive.  Good luck

Ooph that sounds painful. I have ibs c and have to take Laxido 2/3 times a week to make my bowel work properly, may be Senna isn't for you. You must get the right medication for you, everyone with ibs is different!

Hi, you could try charcoal tablets for the bloating; I found them very helpful. Available from all chemists. As already advised, everyone with IBS or IBD requires different remedies.

    Good luck....

Hi you could try taking magnesium citrate supplement, say about 400 mg a day, magnesium draws water into the colon through osmosis makes it easier to go, there's also a laxative called lactulose what works pretty well, it works by osmosis as well.

Try lots of fruit when constipated such as oranges, grapes and prune juice instead of senna. I treat my IBS like this and it helps me more than chemical laxatives. When you have diarrhoea, avoid fruit and use Imodium or codeine.  Bananas or rice will also will help.  Have a look at the Low Fodmap diet to see if any foods are triggering bloating, constipation or diarrhoea. You could also try a food diary. Some people with IBS get bloated when eating gluten products which are in wheat and other grains. IBS symptoms can change a lot depending on stress or food so it is best to try a combination of these solutions.
