Just diagnosed with pcos, any tips on transitioning to a pcos diet?

Part of my pcos has been cravings. I crave chocolate almost constantly. It's so hard to transition into a low carb, no sugar added, and no junk food diet. Any suggestions would be helpful.

First and foremost, it is very important to understand why you want to do it and what you are going to do it to achieve that. Since PCOS is so often accompanied by being overweight, it’s important to make sure you’re not overeating at meals. Figure out your Body Mass Index, and aim to get your BMI under 29. Take a look and various video training series that discuss PCOS and diet in depth. If you are convinced with its benefits, you can make your low GI dishes as delicious as your regular ones, so that you may start liking them. To serve this purpose, you can bring a book called “The PCOS Diet Cookbook: Delicious Recipes and Tips for Women with PCOS on the Low GI Diet”. This book gives the lot of ideas for recipes that are varied, tasty and simple. Eat snacks and mini-meals between breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and don’t let yourself become ravenously hungry or cranky. Be positive. Experiment until you find success. And know that it takes time. The most of important thing to do is reduce your stress!!

Cravings will diminish once your body gets rid off the bad stuff. It's like drugs. The more you eat junk/sugar the more you want it. When a period of withdrawl passes it'll get better. Here are some tips, not in any specefic order:

There are some comfort foods even if you're eating right (but you still need to watch quantities!): brown rice, lentiles, oats, quinoa...

Using spices helps a lot (curry, tumeric, basil, parsley...).

Listen to your body. If your not hungry in the morning do not force yourself to eat breakfast - this is what works for me. If I force myself to eat in the morning I'll feel the need to eat (not hunger) more often.

Almonds are also very good in fighting cravings.

I don't eat dairy, eggs, poultry and red meat (natural hormones, artificial hormones and antibiotics). I've never had te opportunity to stick to organic products so I don't know if it makes a difference.

I avoid soy as well. I dodn't know why but it promotes water retention in may case and even problems with cysts!

I avoid gluten (breads, pasta...); I only eat wheat bran in small quantities.

I often make soups/potages and salads with green beans.

I try not to use salt much.

(It sounds boring, but it can be really tasty!)

I make smoothies with bran (with half an orange, half a banana..) . I dring mostly vegetable juices with some fruit.

I drink water with some herbal teas and sometimes green tea.

    Hope this helps.

Don't give up, it gets better!
