I can only speak from my experience - When I was diagnosed 6 months ago I was started at 20 mg but only once a day.  Within 24 hours of the first dose of prednisone, the pain relief was amazing.  My doctor kept me at 20 mg for 6 weeks and then lowered me 2.5 mg every 3 weeks.  This only lasted until I hit 12.5 and I flared up and had to go up to 20 mg to get relief again.   Still working at reducing the dose but the prednisone is keeping the pain away and that's the main thing!

If you don't get relief within the first day or 2 at most I would be very surprised.  However, it's the start of a long road.  What matters is getting relief.  Everything else is just details as far as I'm concerned.  I'm new to the forum but there's tons of information here.  You'll find things that fit your condition and others that aren't remotely the same.  I'm new here at the forum and there are others much better qualified to give advice.  Good luck!

      Hi Amy

I have tried to see PMR and later GCA as an 'opportunity' regarding my 'whole' health. I followed the advice of Eileen and some fab others on this forum and reduced carbs as soon as on Pred and 12 weeks later i am 10kg lighter and the best weight i have been for a decade. Apart from disappointingly getting some GCA symptoms and having to up my dose to 40mg for a while - I am feeling terrific - yes a bit 'wired' and have to pace myself (also good advice on that here) but after ages of pain and stiffness i am a whole new 'me'. I am realistic I may not feel so extremely good forever but the relief is so tremendous. So I hope your journey has some real 'positives' as well - after all we are all looking for quality of life which makes everything worthwhile.

      All the best

      Rimmy

Feeling so much better today. I will be 72 soon and felt 100 a few days ago.

Knowing I can feel this good will help me get through the ups and downs.

Thank you and I will have questions I'm sure along the way. Hugs

Hi , have had PMR for 2 years and am having a flare up at the moment, haven't had the same results with pain relief from the predisilone as I did the first time. How do others keep their weight off with the steroids , all I want to do is eat .Also was a keen runner and finding it really difficult , any other runners out there with PMR and any help would be appreciated.

Tracey, why not start a new thread with your specific questions as others might not see this unless they followed Amy's thread.

Cutting carbs does help with the appetite and with weight gain - or at least it is well worth a try as it has worked for a lot of us. I lost 36lb of pred-associated weight while still at above 10mg and a lot of others have avoided weight gain in the first place.

After a flare it is not unusal to find it more difficult to manage the symptoms - that is the main reason we go on about reducing slowly and carefully, not ignoring the signs of a flare and so on. Once you get to a yoyo pattern with your dose you can be in trouble.
