Just got news that I have prostate cancer

i just got the results from my biopsy, out of 12 tissue samples 10 were benign. 2 were cancerous 1 reading 3-3 and the other 3-4. Leaning towards active surveillance but urologist  based on the fact that I'm 60 and in good health was leaning towards treatment. Any opinions?

What was the percentage of the samples? What was your psa at diagnosis? What was your cancer staging? What did your urologist recommend as far as treatment, or waiting?

PSA is meaningless, other than as a trend. Mine was 2.5 to 3.5 over a decade. Digital rectal examination told of a moderately or mildly (depending on GP and Urologist in that order).

However, a MRI conducted as part of a PAE pre-operative showed an area of concern. A MRI guided Biopsy (Transperineal Fusion Biopsy) showed a surprising result of Gleason score 4+4=8.

My advice is to pay for a MRI and be sure.

I am about to choose Robotic Radical Prostatectomy as the cancer is localised, and I'd like to live a little longer!

That's why you need to know what it is at diagnosis. If you choose active surveillance, psa will be the measuring stick as to another biopsy, or treatment. Nothing in fighting pic is meanless.

Gleason 3+3 prostate cancer growth rate is extremely slow. the Gleason 3+3 prostate cancer cell takes about 475 plus or minus 56 days to replicate at this rate, it takes about 40 years for a Gleason 3+3 to grow from inception to a volume 1 cm in diameter. prostate cancer may take 50 years or more for progression to pathologically detectable metastatic disease

Why would you want active surveillance you have cancer! It want just decide to pack its bags and leave, so if its contained surely getting rid of C or maybe you will always be thinking I should have LISTENED to my Doctor, I don't understand how you cam lean one way when your doctor advises treatment. Get Rid.

    Good Luck

Just because you have cancer doesn't mean you choose the mist extreme treatment. Especially when it's not Warranted. every person diagnosed with prostate cancer is an individual case.

Being diagnosed with prostate cancer doesn't mean you have to choose the most extreme treatment. Every prostate cancer diagnosis is different, and should be treated accordingly. I have prostate cancer as well and as active surveillance.

That was supposed to read I chose active surveillance

My biopsy results were a lot worse: a higher proportion of malignant samples and a Gleason score of 4 + 5 = 9. For that reason I opted for a radical prostatectomy by means of robotic surgery (DaVinci) which worked out fine, but PSA not settled yet and increasing. This prompted the urologist to put me on hormone (testosterone suppressing) treatment. I'm 76 and otherwise in good health.

It sounds to me that in your case active surveillance is a good option. I would find out what treatment your urologist is proposing (brachytherapy, operation, radiation, hormone?) and learn all I can about its success rate by googling, talking to friends and getting at least a second, if not a third, opinion.

Take things slowly and don't let yourself be rushed. I've lived for years with a very similar biopsy result with active surveillance rather than cancer treatment. Now 65
