What a reply from Joanna! I wouldn’t attempt to add anymore, other than I completely agree with her.

I took Antabuse many many years ago, and like Joanna was petrified to drink and desperately needed to. So much so, I stopped taking them, drank a day later and ended up in hospital.

Thery are far better medications available now, unfortunately getting them isn’t any easy route.

    goog luck with your journey

    Hi Marian

Sorry to hear you have been prescibed Antabuse.

I agree with Vickylou, a fantastic and informative reply from Joanna as always.

A good friend of mine took Antabuse She was shopping in a large department store. Someone sprayed a perfume near her and she vomitted because she had inhaled the alcohol in the perfume. She was so ill, she had to go to hospital.

A very dangerous drug I believe.

Hope you find something more suitable as Joanna has suggested

    Regards

I've been on Antabuse for years. I agree with most of the previous comments though. It will make you extremely sick of you drink (ive tested it, it's not fun). However it does nothing for the underlying problem. In fact I've read that the forced deprivation can actually make the relapses worse when you do have them. From my experience this is true. My relapses have few and far between since I usually have to go weeks withput Antabuse to be able to drink, but if i do drink, it had been very very bad. I should have died during my last relapse. Meds like naltrexone and/or Campral would be much more effective, especially if your having trouble with anstenence. If you're looking more for moderation than abstinence, check out The Sinclair Method. It uses naltrexone, combined with drinking, to help rewire your brain. Havving said all that, antabuse does work, if you take it, and if your goal is 100% absolute abstenence. Just know there are other options if abstenence is still hard for you.
