Just had bunion surgery this morning on left foot

I've been reading the posts on this site and they have been very helpful so I'm very thankful for that!  Have been keeping ice on ankle and foot elevated since I came home from surgery center.  Block has worn off, and pain so far is minimal.  Not sleeping (4:00 am now) good, as I am in my easy chair and just dozing now and then.  Had the surgery with two screws and shaved the bump.  Foot in a velcro shoe.  Tried to prepare for this as best I could, with the tips from everyone on this forum.  I have a wheelchair, walker, and crutches.  From the posts it looks like a shower chair will also be needed.  I will post again tomorrow with an update!  Thanks again for all the helpful information!  Any more tips to make things progress smoothly will be greatly appreciated!

Looks like you are well pearled! I am nearly 7 weeks post op - both feet. (MIS) Went into 'normal' shoes a couple of days ago (no heels for 4 months). Never did use the crutches as I have a small apartment. Nor a shower stool, walker or wheelchair. just had sponge baths for the first two weeks until my bandages came off. Pain was minimal also. Feeling blessed and love my new feet!

    Hi Sheila

I used wheel chair and crutches for two weeks and wheel chair was just great at home and out of home (obviously with my husband driving the car).  I also used a garden plastic chairs in the bathroom,  one placed in the shower and the other outside of the shower so I could dry my hair and do what ever I needed to do while sitting comfortably.  My surgery was much more extensive so you really need to judge what you need based on pain levels and level of swelling.  It is generally much better to take it slowly in the beginnig and keep your foot elevated almost all the time

    All the best

Hi Shelia, so pleased your op went well. I had my procedure (Scarf and Akin) 4 days ago under block rather than general, and so far I am very happy with progress. My anaesthetist instilled in me that once the anaesthetic had worn off after approx 12 hours, the pain would be excruciating for about 36 hours. It was, but I coped with high dosage painkillers, but I am so pleased they warned me. So many people must wonder what on earth they'd done if they aren't warned, but thanks to this forum, I'm following all the advice offered ie. keeping my leg raised for a couple of weeks etc, and I'm finding that my foot lets me know if I've been out of bed too long, it suddenly aches and feels like lead. I've received my cast/dressing protector today, so showering should be a lot easier and more dignified than sitting in the shower-tray and having my husband hoist me out afterwards!!

I hope you progress well with your recovery and although I balked at having bunion surgery five years ago after listening to all the warnings, so far I'm really pleased I went ahead this time - can't wait to see my 'new' foot when the dressings come off.

a cheap plastic chair in the shower is really helpful

Hi Sheila.  Sounds like you have done as much as you can to get ready.  That is great.  I didn't have a shower chair but I used a metal folding chair with a towel over it which worked just fine.  Be sure to put a plastic bag on your foot and tape it at the top to seal out any water.  My surgical nurse told me to eat a half banana with some milk before taking the pain meds and it might help with the nausea.  It worked great for me.  My doctor had me to put the ice on the back side of my knee as the bandages were too thick for the cold to penetrate.  Also you can mix 3 parts water with 1 part alcohol in a zip loc bag and freeze it.  It doesn't get real hard and it works great. You should do 3 so you will always have one frozen. My doctor said elevate 45 minutes out of every hour and ice 20 minutes every hour for the first 2 weeks.  Between ice and elevate you don't have much time for anything else.  Hope this helps and hope you have a great recovery.

Hi Sheila  i hope that you are more comfortable today, i  am dreading my op because have heard so many  bad stories. i hope you recover quickly  sending my best wishes.  i think the main thing is to rest  your foot up as much as possible and if you can tolerate bed   prop your foot up on extra pillows.

Hi hormones.  It is like any surgery.  You have to get your mind set on it and decide that you are going to do whatever you have to do to make it successful.  It can be painful if you don't take the pain meds as directed but if you do the pain isn't that much.  The recovery is quite long but the results are worth it. I am not a sitter by any means, have always been very active but I planned little things to do while I had to be off my foot and movies to watch, which I never do, and I have actually enjoyed the rest.  We work hard on our ranch and I was needing a good rest.  I believe it is all about our attitude.  Prepare as much as you can and it should be easier for you.  I hope it all goes well and hope to see you on here reporting the good news.

I so totally agree with you Wanda,  it is all in attitude.   I am 7 weeks post forefoot reconstruction still having to keep my foot up quite a lot and nowhere near wearing any shoes but I can see progress so I am just happy that I am improving no matter how long it takes.  Keeping reasonably busy with movies,  books, knitting,  drawing,  talking to friends,  watching Australian Open on TV and the time passes.  It does get better and the results are worth it,  so onwards and upwards.

Hi hormones!  Day 3 post op and feeling great.  Last night a little painful but overall bearable.  Went to dr today, everything looked good.  Healing nicely.  Changed bandage, hardly no bleeding.  I expected this to be so much more painful.  Showering is the biggest pain thru this whole experience. Hubby is very supportive, waiting on me hand and foot.  Hope things go easily for you as well!

Hi Shiela, so pleased to hear that you are getting along well  and making a good recovery. fortunatly my hubby will be home with me for the first 3 days but then on my own but i am very independant  so i am sure i will cope. 1 week to go now . still not sure what to expect as i said before my dr  has termed my op as a metatarsal neck osteotomy with a pip fusion.  all the info i have been given  relates to bunions      and i was told that the op i am having is  similar. I have already started buying magazines to read and play word search on my lap top. that will keep my brain in action i hope.  keep me updated on your progress. Jan.

Hi Sheila, fab news on a successful op! I'm currently 3 weeks post op (scarf osteotomy on left toe). I recommend that anybody reading this who is on the fence about the surgery, to do it! I'm 23 which surprised my surgeon and podiatrist no end, and there were 2 ladies having the same procedure as myself, both in their 40s who said they wish they'd had the operation sooner! The majority of the pain was the first 2 days after surgery as the anaesthetic wore off but after that it's just a slight discomfort.

Also, I cannot stress enough to listen to your surgeon when they say take it easy, I was on the sofa 24/7 (toilet breaks permitted) for the first 2 weeks and yes it was very tedious but now at 3 weeks although I still have to rest it mostly, I am wearing my normal trainers and have started the recommended toe exercises and can walk around a little more each day. I even managed a trip to Costa with the help of my mum who dropped me outside and then parked the car!

I also have a bunion on my right foot and would have the op again in a heartbeat!

That's great!  Sounds like you've got this beat!  I' m 8 days post op now, still real sore feeling.  I keep it elevated 24/7 and started putting ice on it again.  Quit pain pills at day 6 because I don't like feeling so loopy all the time.  hubby wants me to go to church tomorrow morning if I can, but don't think it's a good idea to be on my feet yet.  I have a wheel chair I could use but still the thought of my foot dangling down makes me wince in pain!  Non the less I will be parked in my chair with foot up, taking it easy. Get my stitches out next thurs!  Glad you are doing so well.  Will you have your other foot done?  Best wishes!

      Hi Sheila

if you have under arm crutches one of them can be easily used to elevate your foot while in the wheelchair. You put the end which normally goes under arm under your bottom and rest your foot on the part which is normally used to support hands

it is not ideal but much better than sitting with your foot down

I did my đaughter's graduation ceremony in this manner and it worked ok

I was keeping it up 24/7 for the first 3 weeks, I've just gone over the 3 week mark and over the weekend I managed to get a lift into town to go for coffee and back again by car. My foot did start to ache again just dangling there after a while but nothing unbareable. I just made sure I was back with my feet up as soon as I was back home. It felt so good to be back in normal society again I must admit! I've been taking regular photos of my foot and the difference between 2 weeks post op when I had my stitches out and 3 weeks post on friday just gone is incredible! I'm also able to touch off of my toes slightly when up on my feet a bit more now which is great. I will 100% be having my other foot done as and when I can really, hopefully same time next year maybe (I don't think I could bare being confined to the house during the summer months!) Will you be more inclined to have your other foot doing if need be? Take care, and feet up!

If your next surgery was to be the same as the first one then your decision is easy. However the surgeries differ significantly and wroth more complex procedures recovery van take 3 to 6 months or even longer. On my case I am still in post op boot 9 weeks post surgery and was allowed to weight bear only after 6 weeks and very gradually.

you would be well advised to know the exAct procedure for your other foot

But having said all that I personally think it is worth doing no matter how long recovert. My foot still swells and hurts and is not ready for normal shoes but it already looks sou ch better then before surgery

      Good luck

That's great! I know what you mean about getting back to normal society!  When I go this Thursday to get stitches out my sister and I will go for lunch.  Thanks for the tip about taking pics.  I took a before pic.  Will take progress pics also! I will definitely have the other foot done too, but like you, really don't want to be down during summer.  Have to make a decision about that! Feet up, ice pack on ....
