just had my right hip done

had my right hip replaced on 24th October after about 6 or 7 years of worsening pain, was a little poorly from the anaesthetic for a couple of days, and they kept me on a drip and wouldn't let me eat for a week. they got me up as soon as all the tubes and stuff where detached and I was home walking on crutches within a week. I was able to discard the crutches within a few days of returning home and about 2 weeks after leaving hospital I was driving. the worst part of it for me was discomfort at night and I was unable to sleep properly for about a month. Once i was able to sleep on my side and taking a hot water bottle to bed with me things improved dramatical and i was able to get the best nights sleep i had had for years. I am nearly 3 months down the road now and just returned to work as a forklift engineer and i am really glad that I had it done everyday life is just so much easier without the constant pain. OK there is still a little bit of discomfort at times but even that is diminishing as time goes bye. I am eternally grateful to the team at the royal Cornwall hospital (treliske) for the care and dedication that resulted in my successful surgery and recovery and I would recommend this procedure to anyone who suffers from hip pain. p.s I quite enjoyed my 10 weeks off work, got lots of jobs done around the house.

I am having my right hip replaced in August ..i am 43 years old and for the past 16 years was mis-diagnosed with sciatica..i was diagosed with a shallow hip socket 2 years ago which i was born with....for many years until i was about 20 my Nan used to say the pain was \" growing pains\" as the years have passed and i have got older the pain has been getting worse ....of course the bones are getting older and arthritus has set in..i now have no cartilage so its bone on bone...i still work full time as a Custody officer but travelling home on the train is agony especially if i have to stand...the rocking motion really makes the hip hurt....i have a wonderful surgeon at the Royal National Othopaedic at Stanmore Middlesex ...last September i had a inter articular injection under anaesthetic ...pain relief /steroid was injected into the hip and i had no pain for almost 4 months ...could not have another injection as the risk of introducing an infection is quite high and can delay any planned surgery...anyway i love reading other peoples experiences it put your own mind at rest...im thankful i can walk still but thats with determination...i was told my \"sprit is strong\" ...good luck to all those who will be having this operation and continued good health free from pain to all those who have his it done....regards Wendy[/b]

I'm having mine done on Friday. I'm a 38-year-old man with seriously damaged right hip following Perthes disease in childhood. Starting to get quite nervous about it all, but looking forward to having a new lease of life after being in pain and unable to function for so long.

Also had THR on 24th October except it was 2010 and have just returned to work last week.

Made a huge difference to myself and so nice to be pain free for the first time in years!!

Im 43 yrs of age and was diagnosed in 2006. Got by up until about May then the pain was too much and it stopped me doing everyday stuff, walking the dog etc.

Made the decision early June and had op as said in October.

    Best decision i made.

Hi, I’m a 31 male and having a cementless total hip replacement with a ceramic ball against a polyethylene socket in October 2012, less than 3 months away.

I have a target set by the consultant to lose 3 stone prior to the operation so concentrating my efforts on that.

Initial problem started 20 years ago with a slipped capital femoral epiphysis, after 3 operations at the time and basically 18 months on crutches unable to walk I had actually has a fairly normal teens and early adulthood.

I love the outdoor life and really miss being able to do what I used to do. I have a young lad and another child on the way so need to be fit for them.

Pain has slowly increased over the last 3-4 years with loss of movement, the last x-ray about 2 weeks ago showed complete loss of joint space and some erosion of the already mushroom shaped femoral head.

Any tips or advice great appreciated and of course I will offer the same.

Hi, I am 45 years old, and afer having extensive hip surgery as a baby, i know need a left THR, scheduled for the end of December. I am very nervous about having the surgery, primarily becuase I am frightend that my hip will dislocate after surgery. I have attended the OT and physio classes and to be honest, they have made me feel even more worried. Did anyone feel the same way before surgery re risk of dislocation? The other concern I have is due to the surgery as a child, my femur is abnormal and at risk of fracturing during surgery too. My surgeon is excellent but I cant stop worrying about it all, and its giving me sleepless nights

    Many thanks
