Just having some questions

Hi, I am new to this group. I have had herpes for 16 yrs. I got it from my husband when we were dating. He had a cold sore on his lip and we had oral sex. I had a major outbreak and the Dr. just said I had herpes. I have had just a few outbreaks over the past years. My husband never got herpes from me even though we had unprotected sex for 16 years while we were married. So my question is why did my husband never get it from me? He never had sores on his genitals. I am assuming what I have is type 1. So now we are divorced and I am dating a man. He will likely get it from me if we have sex or oral sex. I am just confused as to why my husband never got it!

If your husband gave you hsv-1 the virus is already in his system. Although I don't think it's impossible to have given it to him on your genitals..I believe the chances are small. And for your new partner you need to use protection! Best wishes!

NuMe is right. Your husband already has the virus orally, which protects him genitally, since the virus is already established. That's why he never caught it genitally from you. A new partner with a history of cold sores (always useful to find out at some stage!) should similarly be protected.

If negative, the odds of you passing Type 1 by genital to genital contact are still low (usually via oral sex), especially if you have had it for many years. Might be a good idea to test for both types by IgG to confirm your type, just to be sure.

Ok, so if I got herpes from a cold sore does that mean I have HSV 1? I need to get checked but have never really worried about it since I was married for 16 years. But now that I want to start dating again. If I am with a man that doesn't have it and he gives me oral sex would he get it in his mouth like a cold sore?? Also if I gave a man oral sex could he still get it?? I have never had a cold sore before. I have only had a few breakouts over 16 years.

If from a cold sore, then it would be Type 1. Very unlikely for Type 2 to infect the mouth, although it can. I would test for both by IgG, however, just to know both and be done with it. One thing with HSV, I've discovered, is never assume, lol.

If you do not have it orally, you cannot pass it via giving oral sex. If he gives you oral sex during an outbreak or when you're shedding, he could get it and develop a cold sore. However, if it is Type 1, it luckily recurs and sheds not very often, especially if you've had it for several years.
