Just joined have i left it too late?

Morning all

Well, here goes. I'm 63 this year and am petrified that I am now beyond turning my life around. Have on average 2 1/2 pint of lager and 2 1/2 double vodkas 3 sometimes 4 times a week. I have had a blood test 3 weeks ago and am getting results on Thursday. If I am lucky enough to get a clean Hill of health, do you think my last 3 weeks drinking will make my results null and void. Any advice would be brilliant. Thanks for reading

    Hi

    63 is no age .

If you are still worried after getting your results your dr is the best one to speak to.

Please tell him or her the large amount of alcohol you have consumed over the last three weeks since the blood test which I am assuming included liver function tests.

Liver cells can recover but only if you abstain from alcohol.

    Dear Katherine,

Believe me, it is never too late to become fit and healthy again. I am certain that 3 weeks of drinking will not make your blood test null and void. It takes a while before your body breaks down. From what I understand is that you do not drink every day. That is a good start. Most of the people on here drink every day, so there is a big plus there. Maybe, you could avoid the vodka. Spirits is what kills you. If you want to stop gradually do go and google the Sinclair method. I am in week 5 now. I am still drinking my red wine daily, but much less than 5 weeks ago. Gradually, it will become less. At least I hope so.

I am 56 years old and I try and exercise every day. That helps a lot for the damage you have done for your body. Try and walk or swim daily. Also, try and stay away from spirits. They are much more damaging.

I wish you a lot of luck.

    Kind regards

    CK

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply it means a lot. Whatever the outcome I'm really going to concentrate on banning the booze. Have a great day

I know many people on this forum don’t drink daily, myself included.

I like many used to binge drink so didn’t drink daily. Blood tests aren’t the best way to diagnose liver problems. Abdominal scan is the best way.

I know of several people whose LFTs were ok, when in fact their liver was definitely not ok

Catherine, google acamprosate (campral) an anti craving medication. Worked brilliantly for me.

I do drink socially, at home, infact most places where I’m with people drinking. I know my limit, but the main bonus is I don’t drink secretly and never drink spirits. I could drink a bottle of champagne or prosecco during an evening, and recently did that, difference now I don’t crave a hair of the dog!

Yes, I know that not everyone on this forum drinks daily, but if you manage not to drink daily then you are a huge step ahead of those that don't.

I know that blood test are not the best to detect liver damage in the early stages.

If you feel nauseous often and you don't like to eat, then you probably have damaged your liver, but it is reversible.

i want to be positive here.

Sorry, but I totally disagree that just because someone doesn’t drink daily, certainly doesn’t put them a huge step ahead of those who drink daily.

A daily glass of wine with a meal is not a problem at all in my view. What is a problem is binging on a bottle of vodka or more a day during a three or four day bender then going weeks without any alcohol at all.

Believe you me, i know all there is to know about binge drinking and the harm it can do to your body.

Whilst I agree healthy eating is a good thing, not all liver damage is reversible. The liver can ‘rejuvenate’ itself up to a point, depending on the damage done to it. Alcoholic fatty liver can be reversed, however for some people, by the time the liver damage is discovered it can’t always be reversed

I absolutely and totally agree with every word you have written vickylou.

Binge drinking or going on a bender is still dangerous possibly even more dangerous than the dangerous habit of drinking excessively on a daily basis. My niece used to drink every day. Sadly she died age 29 from alcoholic liver disease.

She would mix with a culture of hardened drinkers in a pub where the landlord broke the law by selling alcohol to the inebriated.

      She also drank at home.

Sadly she died leaving a 10 year old son behind.

I could not be  Publican as in landlady as my conscience would not allow me to sell poison or even to give it away free of charge.

Sorry but that is the reality. To foster the idea that alcohol is safe is a falsehood.
