Just my latest thoughts on my cataract surgery

Hi guys,

I had both eyes operated on for posterior polar cataracts which were supposed to be very complex surgery and it's been around six months since the last eye was done and here is what's going on. First off, the surgery on both eyes seemed to go very well. It turned out to be easier than they thought, thank God. I have an appointment with my local eye doctor this week and these are my issues.

I still have no confidence in my driving even though my vision has been improved from surgery. I am still seeing things that are not there. When I go for a doctors visit the bright lights and white rooms really screw up my vision. The last time I saw my local eye doctor he said besides the posterior polar cataracts I also had an issue with my corneas which he said were no problem although this was the same doctor who originally thought my cataracts were not a problem. I dread going to eye doctor appointments as every time I go another problem arises.

Just wanted to vent a little. Thanks for listening...

    hi john

polar cataracts are the riskiest cataracts to operate on. they have a very high risk of capsule rupture. i am glad they got cataracts out without the capsule rupture. after your issues settle u may need yag as they sometimes do not clean the capsule as it is weak in such type of contracts.

sorry you are going to have to go through this. try to see another doctor to be on the safer side.

Thanks for your comments. I have an appointment next week and I'll post back after that.

      Thanks again...

I too had posterior polar cataracts. The capsule in my left eye did tear during surgery which is one of the biggest risks that come with this type of surgery. You are very fortunate this did not happen to you

I was most definitely lucky. Plus I went to Wills Eye and had a great surgeon.

How are you doing since your surgeries? So your right eye surgery went well with no problems but your left eye surgery had complications?

How did your doctor deal with the tear?

Hope you don't mind the questions...

Are you the sane gentleman i spoke to after my surgery last year? After the surgery where the capsule tore i had a fragment of lens floating in my vitreous. It seems to gave re-absorbed (as they had hoped it would) I dont notice that fragment at all anymore. But now I'm experiencing PVD in that same eye and I have extreme floaters. They are far worse than that piece of lens and are very debilitating

I don't know how sane I am and not sure if you could consider me a gentleman, LOL!!!, but I did converse with you on here awhile ago.

Wow! I'm sorry to hear about your latest issue with your eye. Hopefully that gets corrected soon. I didn't see too many floaters after my surgery, actually both of my surgeries only lasted about 20 minutes each and I never felt a bit of pain or discomfort with the first surgery and the second surgery had very very mild discomfort. No pain at all with either surgery. I asked my surgeon before surgery how long the surgery would take and he replied not long at all if everything goes well but if it doesn't go well, it could take forever. He also had a retinal specialist in the OR while he was operating on me in case things didn't go well. Thankfully he wasn't needed.

I was wondering how long the surgery took in your left eye? Right eye?

What can they do to correct your latest issues with your left eye?

Do you notice a big difference in your driving and how is your night vision for driving?

No. I had Dr. Brandon Ayres at Wills.

Hi Diane, I had significant floaters after PVD also. I just had a vitrectomy done on one eye to remove the floaters. I don't know what your condition is and whether that is something you could consider down the road. In time you may neuroadapt and not be as bothered by the floaters. Depending on the type of floater, there is also a laser treatment available but that gets mixed reviews on effectiveness.

I'm not sure if my current eye issue (pvd) has anything to do with the cataract surgery. PVD is very common and happens to everyone as we age but not everyone gets the severe floaters. MY driving is fine aside from having to see around these floaters.

      Hi Deb

I swear these floaters are making me insane. And I know for a fact that all floaters are not created equal. So many have PVD and have mild to no symptoms but some if us have extreme floaters and I'm one of them. EVERY time I move my eye I see it. My retina specialist wants me to wait a year to see if it settles before he considers vitrectomy. I know there are risks with that surgery so I will have to weigh the pros and cons if dealing with the floaters or having the surgery. Are you happy you did the surgery? How long did you deal with the floaters before you decided on vitrectomy? How was recovery after vitrectomy? ........ are you glad you had the surgery?

I had floaters my whole life. I even had one eye doctor comment on how many I had. They never bothered me. Then came PVD and I totally agree - all floaters are not created equal. Mine would hang around the center of my vision and yes, every time I moved my eyes they would dart back and forth. My vision would go in and out of blurriness. My PVD on my left eye was over a year ago and my right eye was earlier this year. Although I had some neuroadaptation, it wasn't enough for me to tolerate them. Had my right eye done 11 days ago. I also had a lens exchange at the same time. I am so happy to be rid of them. Will schedule left eye in the near future. Recovery was not bad at all. Visual disturbances were the worst (first 24 hours) but not sure how much was related to the lens exchange vs the vitrectomy. Pain was not bad at all and controlled with Ibuprofen. Virtually gone by about 3 days or so. You may find helpful an analogy a retinal doctor gave me. Think of PVD as pulling off a sticker. Sometimes it comes off easily with no mess and sometimes it leaves gunk behind.

Hi John - glad your surgeries were not long given type of cataracts you had.

Sorry about the vision issues you are still experiencing. Do sunglasses help at all with bright lights. I wore them inside for a period of time as everything was way too bright after surgery.

Do hope you find a doctor that has a some answers. As sok said it could be the capsule wasn't thoroughly cleaned and you might need a yag but make sure it isn't something else first.

    Hello Sue.An2,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Yeah, sunglasses really help, but I never thought to wear them inside especially at the doctors office. I'll try that. My problems now might also be related to the cornea problems I have, so hopefully I get some news at my next appointment.

Knock on wood, I've been pretty lucky so far.......
