Just noticed a recent change in my vision.

Only this last week or so I have started noticing like a sort of shadow effect round the edges of things, in particular on the TV where there is white writing with a black or blue background or if like this afternoon the sun was shining through the window onto the white washing basket and behind it is a dark coloured unit. I could see a shadow round the edge of the washing basket. Its things like that. I can even see it on my mobile phone sometimes too depending on the colours on the screen. I'm scared now. Anyone have any experience of this? Thanks.

Please go get an eye examination done, it will put your mind at ease.

Thanks Janet, I will do that. At least I don't see the shadowing normally, not in the least. Its only when watching TV as described above, or when the sun is shining onto something white when there is a dark item behind it.

This sounds like ghosting, I have the corneal disease Keratoconus and ghosting was my first symptom of that, but it can happen for many reasons, cataracts can even cause it. high contrast will show it up more which is why you see it with white on black. is this happening in both eyes or one only? have you tried to cover each eye with your hand to test?

My best advice is to firstly see an optometrist to check your visual accurity, then an opthalmologist to fully check your eyes.

Hi Vigilante, Thanks for your post. As mentioned above, I only get the "Ghosting" when watching TV or when the sun is shining on something light coloured when there is a dark coloured item behind it. I will check when I put the TV on, if its happening in both eyes. It just makes me wonder because I got some new glasses (Prescription glasses round about the time I started having this problem so I'm wondering if there is a link? What are the symptoms of keratoconus? Do you take medicine or did it need an op?

I am surprised that this has cropped up now for me since its only Nov when I had my eyes tested and they were fine then. Will go for another eye test. Thanks again.

Keratoconus is corneal dystrophy, basically the cornea becomes thin and changes shape more from the usual dome to a cone, cant be noticed by the everyday person as we are talking in microns of thickness, it can present with frequent prescription changes, ghosting, light streaks, halos, poor night vision. In my case I have never needed glasses in my life I went from perfect 6/6 to ghosting with both eyes, which it stayed at for around 10 years then my left eye got dramatically worst.

I'm awaiting an operation for that at present.

but what you are describing is definately ghosting, another way to tell is look through a pinhole and the ghosting/shadows will disappear, its basically a refractive error.

Hi Vigilante, I have now checked to see if the problem is in one or both eyes. Its in my right eye though its not seemed as bad tonight. Does the ghosting fluctuate or can it fix its self. Sorry to hear you are waiting for an op. Is it likely that I will need one eventually, even though 99% of the time I am only seeing the shadowing on TV when certain colours are on screen? There it is now, black background with yellow writing.
