Just out of curiosity

Hi all. Just wondered if any of you have had any of the following ailments suddenly appear whilst reducing preds. All seem to have happened since I have got down from 25mg 2.5 years ago to my current 13mg (which I seem to be stuck on at the moment).

1. I have started getting what I believe to be arthritis in the middle fingers of each hand, not at the same time but suddenly they start to ache and within 24 hours swell up. If I increase preds to 15mg a day for two or three days it slowly subsides back to normal.

2. Every morning I tend to wake up, get out of bed and within 2 or 3 steps get sudden pain down my right leg from top to bottom (may be sciatic). this seems to be wear off after an hour or so and not return until the following morning.

3. I seem to have an excess of phlegm (sorry) which I have heard can be a side affect of preds, does any one suffer from this as well.

Any advice will be most welcome and best wishes to you all, Dave (tavidu)

    hi Dave

i have a PMR buddy male who now excretes flem from his saliva ducts and he complains that it shoots out.

my hands swell badly whenever i do to much with my hands. my PMR symptoms were originally in my hands and last week i was using the leaf blower and my hands were crippled, swollwn and cramping which I've never had in the evening. i chalked it up to my pmr.

The excess phlegm could be caused by acid reflux - or silent acid reflux. There is a topic on silent acid reflux with lots of suggestions to try, and Dr Google of course!

ive found the most relief by avoiding high acid foods, and putting my white Pred pills into a gel capsule.

    Morning Dave.

    1.  No doubt the pain and swelling in your fingers is the beginning of OA - one is getting old you know!  Not sure if Pred helps when it comes to PMR.

    2.  Doesn't sound like PMR pain.  I think your suggestion it could be sciatica is more to the point.

    3.  Phlegm, general mouth disorders, do seem to apply to some  PMR sufferers.

How are you now?  Any improvement?

    Regards fr Constance

Hi constance. A big thank you to you, mariane and Mrs CJ for your assistance and advice, will book to see my doctor tomorrow morning as I have now picked up a cough and cold. I have a very good chiropractor who first advised me that I had PMR so will also book an appointment with him.

I was very interested in what Mrs CJ said regarding putting my white Pred pills into a gel capsule, could CJ enlighten me if she has time as to what gel is required. Anyway many thanks again to the 3 of you that have advised me and all the very best. Dave (tavidu)

      Hi David,

Gel capsules are what many pills come in.....the types of pills with powder in them. Gel capsules are just a term for the outside covering.

When i renew my pred prescription I also order the empty gel capsules from my pharmacist.  Because I only take 4 mg they fit into a small capsule but they come in larger sizes.

Acid reflux and silent AF have quite a few symptoms that were a surprise to me.  Before u see your doctor I suggest you look back on this forums topics and find the one called Silent Acid Reflux, and also check out the second topic link within it. My doctor would never have diagnosed me with this, but after my reading about it I know what to do to keep my symptoms reduced until I can get off this Pred.
