Just started Lexipro 5 mg - feeling more anxious

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hello:

?I am only onto Day 3 of 5 mg of Lexipro and I am not sleeping well (3 hours last night) and am waking up with morning anxiety.  My primary care physician prescribed 10 mg, however, the psychiatrist I saw suggested that I cut it in half for the first 2 weeks due to the fact that I had tried Zoloft in the past and pretty much reacted the same way (insomnia, etc.).  Question:  will this ever get better?  I don't want to stop the Lexipro especially since I am only on Day 3 but feeling worse was not part of my plan!

Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Mary Ann,

The same exact thing happened to me. When are you taking the Lexapro? I switched from dinner time to breakfast time. Also, my psychiatrist put me on Klonopin to help get me up to the desired dose of 20mg. It will get better but you may need an adjunct drug to help you. I also recommend Melatonin Time released the brand I use is “Natrol” and it comes in 1mg, 3mg, 5mg, 10mg tabs. I’d try the 10mg if you’re struggling severely. Best of luck & hang in there, it’ll get better!

It took me 7 weeks to finally level out on 5mg Lexapro.  The side effects are not good, but it started to get better, for me anyway, about week 4.  it started with feeling better 1 day, then maybe be 3 days later I would feel better, it is a slow process.  I read comments on here and people would say, if you can stick with it and I can tell you they were right.  I have never had this kind of side effects with any medication, definitely not a fun process.  I still have small feelings of weirdness, but I can manage through just fine.

my sleep just improved. took almost 3 weeks to get some good shut eye. hoping it continues for me and hope your sleep returns. also my anxiety is reducing proportional to my sleep improving.

Definitely do not stop your Lexapro, I hope you give it at least six weeks. All side effects go away after 2 weeks. I would have had insomnia too but I take something )gabapentin (I take that because it works for me as an anxiolytic and it is not FDA approved for that). If I were you, get a script for 2 weeks of Ambien 10mg, or Ativan 1mg prn. Trazidone is a good one for sleep too. The benefits of Lexapro far outweigh the side effects. After 30 days, today actually, in my opinion, Lexapro is amazing! No more anxiety really, not depressed. The one side effect I can’t shake is it kills my libido. I’m not in a relationship so who cares, right? I may stay in Lex for life.

My psychiatristi did prescribe it. He didn’t suggest it though, I asked him for it. I explained that it acts as an anxiolytic for me and helps with any Lexapro side effects. I’m guessing he would rather Rx that for me than Ativan, Valium, Xanax or klonopin.

      I take either 600 or 800 mg, usually 3x a day.

Hey stick with it. I felt the exact same way when i just started lexapro and it was because of this amazing forum i realized and had faith that it will get better as the weeks progressed. Im still not feeling 100 percent but the morning anxiety and insomnia does lessen as the weeks progress. I am on week 5 almost and still struggle on some days but stick it through. We are all hoping for the best.
