Just started Selincro

Hello All,

I've been working my way through the board over the last week or so and its great to see the support thats available together with everyones individual stories.

I've just started taking Selincro last Friday and my experience has been similar to a lot of others (feeling weird, sleep disruption, stretching like a cat all the time) but I must say that I'm heartened by my first impressions.

I've been drinking every day for a long time (20 odd years). I'm now in my mid 40's and although its rare that I get wasted I'll do at least a bottle of wine a night. If I'm at a work function it's a bottle of wine plus about 6 pints. I recently worked out that I was averaging between 70 and 100 units per week depending on what I was upto work wise. I'll maybe do one AF day a month if I'm lucky.

I got Selincro through a UK online pharmacey in January and tried a tablet half heartedly. I felt like S&it after taking it so didnt bother again until last week.

Anyway, heres my experience.

After reading what others had said and looking at what Paul had recommended I decided I'd try a week to get used to it and go from there. Friday would be my start day as I'll normally do a four pack of beer and a litre of wine to start the weekend. Popped the pill in the morning a felt a little weird a couple of hours later but nothing too bad, just fuzzy. Normally at 6pm I'll start a beer or a glass of wine but that evening I had absolutly no interest whatsoever. I ended up drinking water.

Sleep was a totally different thing. I felt like I dozed for 8 hours without properly dropping off.

Saturday is normally two bottles of wine or at least a litre of wine and a few beers. I  took a tablet when I got up and felt a little less woozy than the day before about 2 hours later. Again I wasn't in the mood to drink but forced myself to have a glass. I poured a large one and couldn't finish it, I just didnt want it. Sleep was dozing in fits and starts again so I got up at 4am and saw more than half the wine I'd poured still in the glass. Result, but I was shattered and stretching like a just woken cat.

Sunday was Easter Sunday and again I popped my pill in the morning. Instead of my normal Bank Holiday booze up I had two bottles of beer while the wife got stuck into the wine. I ended up dropping people home in the car late at night as I was the only one fit to drive. Again the sleep was fitful but slightly better than previous nights.

Monday was a bank holiday and the first time I've not woken up on a bank holiday morning feeling a bit rough in a long time. Had a tablet with my morning coffee and went out for the day with the wife and kids. No side effects that day at all. We stopped for our tea on the way home and I ordered a pint of Peroni. It went down awesome, like nectar from the Gods, so I ordered another. I realised as we finished our meal that there was still over half a pint left. This never happens to me and I did something I've never done in my life, I walked out on an unfinished beer.....

We got home and the wife had some wine but I honestly didn't feel like any so drank some water instead.

Went to bed on Monday night and decided I'd see what it was like to take the tablet just before bed instead of in the morning. Big Mistake.......spent the night shaking in bed like a pair of marracas. Didn't sleep a wink it felt like.

Tuesday I was out and about and home for 6. Normally this is the cue to say hello to the wife and kids with a kiss as I uncork a bottle of wine but there was no urge to open the bottle. The wife had some wine with dinner and was saying that if I'm to follow TSM properly then I should have a drink but I honestly didnt feel like one. I didnt want to force myself into doing something that I honestly didnt want to do. Its ace thatthe wife is behind me on this but its the first time in 17 years shes ever tried to force a drink on me :-)

So here we are on Wednesday. I had a pill this morning with no side effects after a good nights sleep last night (only woke up twice). Normally by this point since last Friday I'd have drunk a minimum of 50 units, usually more. Upto today I've had 7. I'm actually very pleasently surprised. I've done the abstaining on certain days and had "time off" from drinking but I'm usually white knuckling my way through until I can grab a beer, its not been like that this week.

I'm sure that this is the honeymoon phase and that things will get a lot more difficult before they even out. I'm in Las Vegas for a week next week with work so that will be a major test. I'm normally first at the bar and last to bed so we'll have to see how that pans out. I'm taking my tablets with me and the plan is to have a crack and do my best.

Onwards and upwards. I'll continue to post sporadically and if anyone reads me or wants to pass comment that would be just fine and dandy :-)

Cheers Kiddos

Muffy. Are you taking the pill one to two hours before drinking ? Sounds like you take it in the mornig and drink in the evening, which is wrong ?

      Hi Boo

I've found that works best for me, I'm sure other people will have different experiences.

I tried it in January by taking two hours before and had a bad experience, this time has been a lot more palateable.

In what way ? Interested to try. I take mine 2 hours before drinking usually, which seems to work but l wonder if taking it earlier would work even better ? How long before you drink do you take the magic pill ?

I didn't like the "spaced out" feeling I had after two hours of taking my first tablet. I wanted to get past that feeling. I've had no urge to drink to excess whatsoever. Last night I bought a bottle of wine and drank only two glasses as I honestly didnt feel like it. My first glass was at 7.30 and I went to bed at 12.30

Well done mate, i enjoyed reading this as i've just started naltrexone which I believe is similar and i'm going through the same phase of "testing" out how it works. I hope I manage to have as much success as you as I hadn't really thought about units in a week till I read it in your post and I reckon I've been close to 200 a week over the past few years. I wish you well and look forward to hearing how you get on :-)

      Thanks Keith.

I hit the gym last night and came home with a thirst from hell. Instead of drinking water I opened a bottle of Peroni and chugged it. I realised afterwards that I was just thirsty and not craving a beer, it was just that the Peroni was close to hand. There where another few in the fridge but I didn't bother with them. I ended up forcing myself to have a glass of wine when Match of the Day was on and got to bed around 12.30. I'd finished a large glass but there was 3/4 bottle left in the fridge this morning together with a load of Peroni. I'm made up with that. As I keep saying, my experience will be different than others but I feel like I'm on the right track.

hey man, well done on that. i know what you mean about sometimes getting confused between being thirsty and wanting a beer. good job on the wine too, sounds like you're doing really well and the selincro is helping.

i'm on day 3 and i'm amazed that i've had a friday half day and i walked past loads of people in beer gardens when i left work and i didn't go in, not even for 1. it's nearly 7pm and i'm sitting sober as a judge rather than half-cut in the pub since 1 o'clock.

keep going man, it's gonna get easier too :-)
