Kate Spade, 55, Depression

Are we having a harder time with menopause than previous generations? 55 seems to be a very hard time for most women.  Is there a better way to  aging gracefully ?  Life is busy, responsible and unraveling at 55 for so many.  It is obviously not our set of circumstances as we tell ourselves. What is being overlooked?

I read about Kate's odyssey and apparently she suffered from untreated manic depressive disorder.  When coupled with hormonal shifts, it is a dangerous mix.  Especially since she refused therapy / treatment.

Her husband has said that Ms. Spade had been suffering from anxiety and depression for some years and was in treatment.  They were separated but trying to work things out and focus on being a family.  Her pain must have been greater than anyone could have known.

I have to think it was unbearable as  I have two daughters and couldn’t bear the negative impact it would have on them. The oldest loved Kate’s style and bought her products. I drove her to her root canal and this popped across our phones. It gave us the opportunity to talk about it.  May we all hug our loved ones more often.

Agreed.  I feel that way about my nephews.  My sister has sole custody and we are close.  They help me stay strong and I try to do the same for them.

I think we are! Stress is stress. My parents generation, they worried about the same things today as we do... Will their loved ones come home from the war, enough money to pay the bills, health, aging parents. Today, we have all that, plus the constant barrage of our cell phones pinging, kids needing to be somewhere every second, social media, constant news wars, etc. Technology is great, I love it, but really, it's killing us, those that try to keep up and connected. Everything is too fast pace. There's so much noise in this world, we don't know how to sit down, eat dinner and watch a movie in the evening. We don't know how to think for ourselves.

When was the last time you sat on your porch with your neighbor???

I think, I believe, that all this stress plays a HUGE role on our health. My granny used to say nerves were the cause of all illness. I think she might be right.

She glad I came across this. As soon as I saw on the news about Kate Spade and heard her age I told my husband I would bet anything that hormones was at least partly to blame.

I told him that I often wander what my purpose in life is anymore. I believe hormones and menopause change the way women think totally. It messes with your mind
