hi all

new to this, but having a bilalateral hip replacement on 21st may, am quite nervous but excited at the same time, just want to get my life back.  It's very hard to walk as in pain and bone on bone.

have been to joint school which was very useful and helpful, one thing I am really dreading is having to sleep in my back for 6,weeks. Don't know how I'm going to do it.

kaye.

Hi Kaye. I am 10 weeks post op and feeling good. The back sleeping was probably the most frustrating but you just catch up during the day. I used to go for a walk lunchtime then actually go to bed for a while. Always managed to sleep and felt refreshed when got up. I found it helped that everyone else seemed to find sleeping difficult. There will be light at the end of the tunnel. I sleep either side and back now!  Wishing you a speedy recovery. It is an amazing op xxxx

Thank you for your message , will have to catch up on sleep In the day. Yes everyone does seem to find sleeping on their back hard, but as you say it's an amazing opp. Just hope I regain being able to walk.

Sleeping on your back is difficult if you are not used to it.  A pillow or some sort of cushion underneath your knees does help to relax them and take some pressure off your back too.  Hope you get on all right.  6 weeks seems a long time at first but it is surprising how quickly it goes.

Hi Kaye. I found the best thing I ever bought was a 'V' pillow. I used to sleep as upright as possible with the 'V' on the tops of my shoulders helping with head flop lol. Wishing you all the very best. X

    Hi Kaye,

Its normal to be scared, but you will be fine. I am 5 weeks post THR right side, and feeling good. I had the anterior approach, which is good. I am in Australia. Four years ago i had bilateral knee replacement, so i know what you are facing. Just make sure you get enough pain relief for the first month or so, and physio, physio, i found hydro twice a week fantastic. Good luck to you, you will blitz it.

You're right that is probably the worst but small price to pay for amazing difference your new hip will make.....I think the forst 3 weeks were the worst but plenty of cushions and pillows and a plastic bag to help you slide your legs up and down and sideways really help .....keep taking the pain meds for as long as you need...no point being a martyr...oh and calms or similar sleep remedy was good....good luck! You'll be fine...

Hi, thank you, had been told about the plastic bag for getting into and out of bed so will try that.  Wil take pain meds, will be so nice to be able to walk without pain and the chrunching noise.

I'm 3 wks post op now any getting used to it. Because I'm nit as active as normally am realise I don't need as much and I have a nap in the afternoon! Every time I get up for the toilet I rearrange pillows...sometimes 1 pillow or 2 or 3 pillow under my knees. It's not too bad and so worth it xx

I dreaded the sleeping on my back as well but I got through it with a pillow under my thighs or knees and then propping myself up a little bit. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Now I've got to do it all over again with the other hip,but this time I know I can get through it. Good luck!

Can't imagine how you can cope with  both hips at the same time !!!

Hi, lovely to hear your doing so well, a lot of people can't believe some people have both replaced at the same time, but believe me it's got to be better than how I am now, I can hardly walk, so much pain and I can hear and feel the bone rubbing on bone.

So so bring it on, I'm tough!
