Keep getting violent hiccups

Hi,

I have had really violent hiccups over the past few days and I am wondering what may be the cause? They are extremely loud and painful, especially when the hiccup comes unexpectedly and I have exhaled.

I have had this happen around four times today, most recently ten minutes ago. The episode lasted about five minutes but I haven't eaten or drank anything in around six hours.

Around four hours ago, the hiccups were so bad a little bit of vomit came up into my mouth.

Any advice would be appreciate!

Do you have any other symptoms like feeling numb, nauseated or fever, pain in abdomen, etc ?

It is said that drinking water stops it. Generally the people have such episodes which finish automatically. If they don't, then you may consult a Doc.

When I get the hiccups, I eat plain sugar on a teaspoon. It usually works for me! If this doesn't work, you may have a more serious problem and you might need professional help. (doctor)

Persistent hiccups over this length of time should not be ignored.  Have you been drinking more alcohol than normal e.g binge drinking?  This can cause persistent hiccups . In the short term you should breathe in and out with a paper bag over your nose and mouth,so that the carbon dioxide levels in your breath gradually get higher. Do this for about one minute and the hiccups should stop. If they keep recurring you should see a doctor. There may be a an underlying cause, but dont worry.
