I am shortly to undergo bunion surgery. How will I keep the dressing dry when bathing or going outside?

After bunion surgery they will cover it with dressing and bandage, it depends on what surgery you are going to have, some patients they put a hard cast but mine is just a bandsge but good enough to stabilize the foot, with the help of the boot. I showered after 2 days with my feet outside the bathtub and sitting on the chair, i have to sit in the edge of the bathtub and slide myself in the chair so i don't have to put weight on my foot. we have shower curtain so i just covered the part knee up. So my foot is just hanging outside. So far it works for me.

plastic bag.
As for going outside you will...or should... be given a special shoe/boot
to wear....
The first 2 weeks should mainly be spent with your foot elevated.

John - I got myself a Limbo cast protector, enough to cover just above the ankle. Will do the job admirably in a shower, but not really recommended for immersion in a bath for more than ten minutes or so if my memory serves me correctly. As for going out, you will (I hope) be keeping your leg elevated ("toes above nose" for a good week or so, so don't rush it! Also, don't skimp on the painkillers (but no more than the daily recommended intake!) In any event, take the advice and guidance offered to you by the Orthopaedic Team - they will have your best interests at heart - and good luck!!!
