Kidney Function dramatically reduced after THR anyone else suffering?

Hi, I had a non cement THR at the end of September. I am a 53 yr old man who's kidney function was normal in August and at my pre op appt. However, I came out a day later than planned as a result of my kidney function being down. Subsequent blood tests show it still down. I am now referred to a Renal specialist and my function is 30% of what it should be. I feel really tired all the time and light headed. I have back pain in the morning and bouts of gout in my ankles and feet. Has anyone else experienced this or do you know why it has happened. I waited 10 months for the op and now I am at the end of my tether. Any comments would be appreciated. Regards Eric

hi eric,
sorry to hear about what your going through mate, not nice at all. I can offer no advice or anything but i am going through very similar symptoms. i,m also a 53 y/o male, only difference i waited alot longer. I had the gout problem which i,ve never had before, as well as feeling tired alot. I think i better go have a blood test done. Through forums like this hopefully we can find an answer. My op was on the 16th of nov. Where i live it takes about 5 working days to get the results, so i,ll ask my doctor an see what he has to say. Did you have the ceramic bearing or the metal implant ? The research i done prior to my op showed that non cemented was the better option than the cemented one health wise. Hope your feeling better soon mate, i,ll let you know what my doctor says if my results come back the same rgds ian.

Hi Ian,Thanks for the reply but sorry you are in the same boat! Yes, get the blood test and see. I had the metal one with a spinal anaesthesia . Doing a trawl of papers on the internet it seems a relatively common complication from hip and knee replacements. I have found Cherries help for the gout and have been told eating porridge and drinking coffee ( yes really!) reduce the flare ups. Also not to take Ibuprofen or Naproxen for pain relief as it inhibits kidney function. Let me know how you get on and I hope yours is coincidental. Regards ,Eric

I am not sure it is the THR that is the problem, but the drugs that people may be taking.

I have a liver function problem that is stopping my blood from clotting as fast as it should (Factor VII deficiency) which was only picked up at my recent revision. I am still trying to find out what caused it (it was not alcohol, but similar liver damage) and if it is reversible. Problem is, it's so rare (one in a million) that hardly anyone knows anything about it.

Hello Eric
It is such a concern when the kidney count drops. My issue was prior to the surgery. I had metal poisoning due to a metal hip replacement. This metal hip was to be replaced in late January and the kidney count was in the September prior to this. If this could not improve they were not going to do the surgery which had become critical with a massive tumor that had formed, also being caused by the metal corrosion. I stopped all medication (with discussion from rheumatologist specialist) and have to feel that voltarin was a major player. I drank heaps of water, avoided alcohol completely and only ate healthy food. My count improved over the the 3 months (53) and the surgery thankfully went ahead. The replacement was ceramic/titanium. My metal hip was a Smith and Nephew brand.
I hope that things improve for you, but perhaps look at any medication you are on and drink a heap of water and monitor you diet.
All the best.
