I have had a small kidney stone for a year now.And it has not gotten any lager. But I have had pain on my right side and lower back.It was so bad I had to go to the e.r. for pain. And when they did a urine test they found blood in my urine. Can any one tell me what could cause this. And does it mean you may have bladder cancer.

Most likely the stone is causing the blood in the urine. I had a 7mm stone jumping around  in my bladder for 2 years and this caused bleding and pain which the doctor (and I) thought was most likely a urinary track infection. It  came and went. Eventually I had a cystoscopy which found the cause of my long term pain was a kidney/bladder stone. If you are worried about bladder cancer then have a urologist do a cystoscopy.  Where is the stone and how was it first diagnosed?

No, it doesn't mean that you may have bladder cancer. Stop worrying please.

A kidney stone is a foreign body located in sensitive parts of the body and it can be an irregular, jagged shape that can cause pain and bleeding when it moves around. Many people have kidney stones that sit innocently and they don't realise that they have them until the stones decide to get a move on and maybe think about passing down the ureter, bladder, urethra. This is when the pain kicks in and blood can be detected in the urine. Imagine a piece of gravel being pushed down your tubes and you can appreciate how painful it can be and how the sharp edges might cut into the walls of the tubes.

The 'safest' way to lose a kidney stone is for it to pass on its own because this means no surgical intervention has been necessary. Your doctor has decided that your kidney stone should be left for a year to see if it passes without intervention. Now, it seems to be on the move and I'd wager that this is responsible for the pain and blood in your urine.

If pain continues then ask your doctor for painkillers. There are strong painkillers available e.g. diclofenac that can really help during stone-passing time.

Keep up with the drinking of water as this will help to flush out the stone and stop it getting bigger.

If it won't pass on its own then you might need further help and your doctor will advise you of the options. Mine passed after lithotripsy which wasn't too bad at all.

Stop panicking and keep in touch with your doctor so that you get the right treatment at the right time.

Let us know how you get on.

I totally agree with Sheffnet. Please don't worry about cancer.

More likely it's the stone causing bleeding and pain.

I found Voltarol suppositories (Diclofenac sodium) were the best for the pain after my kidneys ached after my laser surgeries.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Thanks. And I most certainly will.As a matter of fact I go in on the 6th of April to have that dye injected. So they can see what!s really going on with this stone and to see about the blood in the urine and I am kind of nervous about that. But I know with God on my side I should be fine.
