I've sadly suffered from bouts of both back pain and kidney stones. I have to say the differences are pretty stark, though I can certainly appreciate your concern and wonderment if the back pain isn't a stone. None of my stones were ever at my back; instead they were always on the upper areas of my sides. I'll be curious how others answer your question. Have any anti-inflammatory pain meds helped you at all?

I also have the pain in my right upper side. I do have a kidney stone in my right kidney but I'm getting the feeling the doctors don't believe if the stone is in kidney it can cause pain. they seem to believe only if its in the ureter can it cause pain. For me the pain is like Labor Pain.

I had multiple kidney stones all last year. Had keyhole surgery to remove them and I am now fine. The pain was in the right upper side, towards the back. No lower back pain with it, pain was higher up.

Have you actually been diagnosed with kidney stones?

If you suspect this might be a kidney stone I would talk to GP and get them to refer you to a urologist.

If you find you have got a stone, the sooner you find out the better.

Hope this is not a kidney stone for your sake.

I had the pain in my lower back like a contraction. It came and went. It later moved to my lower left side and led me to the ER where they confirmed it was a stone stuck in my urethra. I was sent to a urologist and just had surgery to remove the stone. I hope you feel better but please see a Dr to confirm what is causing your pain. Stones can pass on there own but there are meds that can sometimes help.
