Kidney stone pain lasting months. Is this normal?

Hi there,

I was diagnosed with kidney stones in March, having quite a few in my left kidney. I was hospitalised. The pain was inbearable as one was trapped. Although, I didn't notice any passing of stones. Anyway, since then I've had twinges in my back and groin area and lower abdomen.

In the last 5-6 weeks, I've experienced bad bouts of uncomfortable pain. Not only on my left side, but on my right too.

I went to ER one morning when I woke op with horrific pains again and they quickly did a CT discovering I still have stones in my left kidney.

They seem to be ok with letting me home with painkillers. As long as I'm not in unbearable pain, they don't seem worried.

I am worried because the pain has lasted so long. Like I said, it's my groin, pubic area, lower abdomen, under my ribs and of course, all over my lower back. It's so uncomfortable.

It doesn't help that I've had random vaginal bleeding recently (which I'm being tested for) so I'm freaking out that all of this is so much more than a common gyn problem and kidney stones that has coincidentally happened at the same time...

Anyone else experiences anything like this??

    👋 hi there!

I'm so sorry to hear that you are having so much to deal with. I had my first kidney stone stuck in May 2014 and I had another one last New Year.

The pain was indeed unbearable. I was hospitalised both times with stents put in and had the laser surgery as the stones were too big to come down by themselves. I was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism and had a parathyroid gland out of my neck as this was causing abnormal hormone levels and my high calcium levels. As I had had this faulty gland; stones had built up in both kidneys. They lasered as much as they could but I have calcium stones in both kidneys still and the last one was probably one of those old ones that had fallen down again. I do still get pains in my sides every now and then. Last time I also managed to get urosepsis from the blocking stone!!

I really recommend using a Voltarol (diclofenac?) suppository to help with any unbearable pain as these took it away like magic for me...

I hope the bleeding is nothing to worry about. I had bleeding but it was from the stent and surgery.

    Wishing you better soon.

    Angie.

My GP took me off diclofenac suppositories because I was bleeding from the back passage.

      I'm worrying myself sick!

      Hate it!

The pain is just annoying more than anything. Scared it gets to that unbearable stage again. Also scared that the pain means something worse than just the kidney stones. I think I would be worse than this if that was the case. Ibuprofen is working to an extent at the mo. Dims the pain. I just want a wee break. Not sure whether to go back to the doc about it. They keep just giving me pain killers.

Yeah, apparently they're not allowed to give that anymore.

Really? I got it in January and Feb time ??

I'd be lost without it 😱😱😱

They really don't explain these things to you very well.

I assumed I was bleeding because I was given this as a suppository. Not at all apparently I was bleeding because it was diclofenac. Nurse said ibuprofen would have the same result so not good.

I never had any bleeding with it. Also it was a life saver for me. I would probably have thrown myself out of a high window if it wasn't for diclofenac! It is prescription only now I believe.

Think it depends on how your body reacts to it. I know NHS have pulled it from prescription at the moment due to weighing up the side effects etc.

Well god help me if I get another stone stuck is all I can say. The only doctor who knew what to give me (other than diclofenac) was a Greek doctor who saw me in Greece when I had my first attack. He gave me a pain killer intravenously and boy did it work!! He said it was an opiate.

I couldn't get the name of it because of the language barrier.

Morphine just doesn't even touch the pain and just makes me nauseous and throw up and feel dizzy unfortunately!!

If it works for you, by all means. Everyone is different and do what works for you. Glad you got some good relief. Try and find out the name. That stuff sounds good!! I know what you mean by morphine. Horrific pain when it happens. Go gets crossed we don't go through that again!! Sending positive vibes.
