Kidney Stone Stuck

Long story short, I have about a 12 yr history with stones, had to have the first two surgically removed but have passed all of the others on my own (10+).

I have had this current stone since July. The pain and symptoms would come and go to where I could deal with it and continue trying to pass it. In October I finally went to a Urologist and had a CT done because the urinary symptoms had gotten so bad. They said that it was right at the bladder and to take the Flomax and drink up.

Over the past few months the urinary symptoms have gotten so awful; almost constant urgency, lots of pressure down there and burning. The crazy thing is that sometimes I have absolutely no symptoms at all. Sometimes that's for half a day but sometimes a day or two and then it comes back full force.

I went in yesterday for another CT because I am ready to have this thing surgically removed and my Dr wanted me to get another one. The doctor's office called a little while ago and said - the report shows a 5-6mm stone "at level of the right junction within the bladder" and that it was "unchanged" since the previous CT. They called because they were told to schedule surgery but she wanted to check with me since it was in the bladder which "typically" does not cause pain and symptoms.

Has anyone had a stone stuck in the bladder and if so, for how long? I've been reading up on kidney stones stuck in the bladder and while they typically do not cause problems it seems that if it has irritated the bladder wall that it can/will. It's so hard to say yes to surgery = $$$ knowing that it is right then in the bladder but I also know that I can't keep going like this AND it apparently hasn't moved since the CT in October and I've been on the Flomax and drinking like crazy.

Any thoughts or input would be great! Thanks!

I had a stone back in October that got stuck at the junction right before entering the bladder. It was bad enough that my right kidney stopped functioning almost completely. I was in so much pain for 4 weeks because they kept telling me I would pass it on my own since it was only 4-5mm. No such luck. I learned later on that I had scar tissue at the junction from a kidney infection I had when I was about 5 that helped the stone get stuck. Anyway, eventually had it blasted. I had a stent in place for a week after the operation. During that time with the stent, if I moved a certain way, I would feel the stent touch the wall of my bladder....and yes....it most certainly did HURT! So, I am inclined to think that a stone in the bladder could still cause tons of pain. My advice, regardless of where it is, is that you have waited long enough at this point. Get the surgery. My doctor told me that once it enters the bladder, you are home free. But, I have a friend that says he has had stones stay in his bladder for 7-9 months. There's no one answer for everyone. We all have different bodies. Don't let a doctor tell you that you can't be having pain just because it's in your bladder. The medical community works for you, so demand relief. I wish you well and please keep us posted!

I absolutely agree with the reply above. Only you know how bad the pain is, and it seems to me like you have given it time and you have done everything you can to assist the stone’s extraction naturally.

I have got to wait for a decision on mine; I have frequent uti infections and have had 2 lots of surgeries for blocking stones. Now I’ve been told I’ve got several stones in each kidney still left! Oh joy!

    Just hope they don’t move!

    😩

Good luck and keep us posted.

Not sure if this will help but here is my story.

January 2017 diagnosed with kidney stones having had a CT scan.

Referred to another urologist. Saw him and he referred me to another urologist. Saw him and he referred me to another urologist in Bristol who removed kidney stones by keyhole surgery at beginning of December.

I was a complicated case (hence being referred to different urologists) because I have horseshoe kidneys, they are joined together, which made access to the stones a lot more challenging. The operation was risky and they were very near the bowel and liver area. However they did manage to get to all the stones (or so they said) I think my uretha was narrow.  Now the pain has come back a bit and I have had another urinary tract infection. GP thinks the stones may have come back.  Don't really understand how that can have happened so quickly. Appointment with urologist who operated on 2nd March.

Do take care and keep in touch

    Praying for you

    Sarah
