HI Taff, I have tried braces but I find them too 'stiff' . I have Polyarthritis but my knees and ankles are the worst. Luckily I find tubular bandages quite comfortable. I wear them in bed and also when I go out. When my ankles are really bad I do wear 'elastic'' braces when I have to walk quite a way (for me that means about 20 minutes)!

I've not tried a knee brace as such but I use a Kneedit. You can google it. You strap id under your knee and it acts as shock absorber taking pressure off the knee.

Please get your knees and hips checked by a good orthopedic Doctor. You can wait too long.

I should add that I have had both knees and hips as well as one shoulder replaced. I have no pain and I am able to walk a mile. I just had a back fusion, of L 3, 4, and 5. Again, no more pain.

The secret is to do all of the rehab that they want you to do. I am 68 years old.
