Has anyone else have painful knee buckling years after TKR? It must be too soon to be wearing out. It has happened about 10 times in the last 3 days

Hip and knee replacements typically last up to 25 years which is why docs want to do them on people in their 60s so they probably won't ever need another one. After my hip replacement (30% of my hip was dead...necrotic) at age 60, I asked the doc when I could get back on my skates because I was still playing hockey (45 years). He told me that I could restart in about six weeks but that I'd be back for a new hip in three years. Seems that I had given or absorbed about 5,000 hip checks too many. Immediately sold off all my equipment...I want 25 years out of the hip.

Same with the knee. There's a whole list of absolutely prohibited activities for the knee...all revolve around pounding the knee (running, jogging, competitive sports, singles tennis, etc.) or twisting/torquing it (sharp turns in tennis, hockey, etc.). Doing one or both of those two things will absolutely destroy the device within a few years.

If you've been doing that since your TKR, then you have the most likely reason why the knee could be failing. We've had people report their determination to go back to double-black diamond skiing a few months later. Everyone makes their own choices.

If not, then an ortho will have look to see what's wrong. Some people have reported that the glue holding the device in place had failed. Others have had infections that affected the surrounding structures. These and maybe some other causes that I'm not aware of are extremely rare. I've been on here for the past four years and have heard a story here and there...no real preponderance of these kinds of cases.

If a revision is considered, the ortho will give you your options. If the knee is failing when you twist the knee, you'll need a brace that absolutely prevents the knee from doing that. After some research, I was directed to the DonJoy Defiance Double Hinge knee brace. Used in pro sports, the knee can flex but not ever twist. You may want to consider this to avoid any further damage. Your ortho will guide you.

I had knee buckling after my TKR within months. Mine was because the knee cap within a month of surgery detached. My original surgeon prescribed a brace that didnt work. I had my 2ND TKR 10 months later. i am now at 12 weeks since my 2ND TKR and I am finally able to walk without a limp. Go see your surgeon. I refused to let my first surgeon operate and insisted on seeing a specialist in revision surgery and post TKR problems.
