Knee is total agony.. Chronic Pain 🙁

Hi, I'm new to this site so bare with me... I have had excruciating pain in my right knee for 3.5 months, have only been to doctors 2 weeks ago as it's got so painful it's disturbing my day to day & now at night in bed.
The pain is at the front & both sides.. It radiates to down my leg & round the back now.. Turning over in bed, resting, walking, getting up stairs or even sitting or standing I am in agony.. My doctor checked it wasn't my hip or ankle & said it's definitely from the knee cartlidge.. Even the Medic where I work has said I've done more damage for going so long without getting it seen to..
Anyway, I've had an X-ray which bones are fine.. Now doctor has referred me to Hospital to see knee specialist, i go back to doctors on Thursday for extra pain relief as Paracetamol just don't touch me.. My dad has had wash outs in the past which ended in TKR In both knees.. Now I know what pain he went through many years ago.. ๐ณ
Has anyone else suffered really bad with this & what did you do for relief? Painkillers & Hospital appointments? What was your outcome?
Would appreciate all advice & what happened... Many thanks ๐

I'm so sorry to hear that you are suffering so much. I can indeed sympathize with you on that! I went 'round and 'round with insurance because there is a protocol that they follow (x-rays, physical therapy, cortisone shots, arthroscopic surgery, etc.) BEFORE they will consider a person for any knee replacement.
In four years of wasted time my knees got worse, pain increased, and my X-RAYS showed INCREASED damage. I was BONE-ON-BONE with no cartilage. EXCRUTIATING pain that radiated from knees to ankles and from knees to hips. I had very limited quality of life.
Fast forward to last June. I had my first TKR. Honestly, the surgery improved my quality of life almost immediately! The pain I experienced was HEALING PAIN, and that awful radiating pain and throbbing I had had for years was GONE! Of course there was recovery as you have following all surgery, but I felt better day by day. I KNEW that without surgery I would continue to feel WORSE day by day.
Three months later I had my right knee replaced. It went even better than my first.
Nearly a year post op from # 1 surgery and eight months with # 2, I am able to stand and walk as long as I want. I have arthritic pain in OTHER joints, but my KNEES feel great. I worked outside in my garden about eight hours the other day -- needing breaks for iced tea but not to sit down and rest every few minutes like before. My knees were strong and steady on uneven ground. Before, I was extremely unstable even walking on a flat surface due to my bowed knee bones and no cartilage to act as a shock absorber. HUGE IMPROVEMENT to my ability to do things I enjoy doing WITHOUT constant pain.
I wish this improvement for you, too!
You mentioned that your dad experienced this prior to his TKR surgery. There is osteoarthritis on both sides of my family, so symptoms sounded VERY familiar when they began. The disease causes cartilage to deteriorate. The loss of cartilage causes the bones to rub together. Our bodies weren't designed to have this happen, so PAIN...LOTS of it...happens. Medication can help, but even medication can't remove the fact that knees are NOT functioning as they were intended to function.
Proper X-RAYS will show the condition of your knees. I hope that you will get relief from your pain and treatment that will lead to improvement.
For me Ibuprofen which is an anti-inflammatory helps better than any prescription medication. My best pain relief, however, was SURGERY to eliminate the CAUSE of my pain!
I hope this helped to answer some questions.

I've been to the doctors again today & my hospital appointment is being rushed through so hopefully a few weeks I should hear. In the mean time I am now on Oramorph & Zapain.. 1st night as only got prescription today. I'm resting now as I've walked all day in work & as I'm supposed to be on light duties I'm still doing the work of 5 people so I'm shattered.
Up at 6 am again so I am looking forward to a weekend of resting my knee..
Will let you know how it goes.. Glad your feeling much better with your knees... There is hope for me yet ๐ Xx

Of COURSE there is hope for you! Recovery just takes A LOT longer than ANY of us ever expected!
I just keep reminding myself of how detailed and complicated the surgery is and how much TRAUMA takes place in the body. Then I am feeling better like I REALLY EARNED taking a break and having a nice cup of tea!๐
Everything will go fine.
Sending prayers of patience, strength, and calm to you tonight!๐ธ

I couldn't wait to get home from work to rest them... I am not used to discussion boards but have found this to be very helpful with people who know what I am going through... I don't wish this pain on anyone but I'm so glad others have had it as it helps to know & have good advice from you.
I will keep you posted on how I get on day to day & I should have my hospital appointment through very soon as a MRI has also been requested ๐

Took myself back upstairs to a cool bedroom with fans blasting in all directions, felt sick & slept most of day...
Dreading work tomorrow, feel like sawing leg off at the knee ๐
Can't take meds when working so will have to suffer til I'm home, feeling sorry for myself at moment & need to man up & get on with it ๐
