Knee itching

ok, with more than 96k posts on this forum, I probably have missed this topic and am sincerely humbled to even post this with all the patient concerns i have read. I am two months post op TKR. For around the last two or three weeks, i have had a severe itching on the entire surface of the, not just the incision scar. When i just can't resist, i have to scratch but afterwards the knee surface becomes painful. Has anyone out there experienced this and what in the world could be causing this and is there a remedy?

Yes, I had servere itching. And it's all part of the healing process. Remember many layers of muscles and tendons were cut through to get to the joint, so they are all healing. I was advised by my surgeon to not a scratch.but to rather lightly "slap" all around the knee where it was itching. Mine was also at around the 2 weeks mark. And laster about 2 weeks

Very, very common. There are lots of posts about people using various salves, oils and ointments until they find one that works for them. It's the nerves, muscles and tendons trying to knit back together so anything topical may or may not work. You do not want to take nerve meds for this as it lessens over time. Many recount the feeling when the leg rubs against sheets or pants. In that case, wrap it loosely with an ACE bandage or get a knee compression sleeve one size larger than you would normally take. You want the protection, not the compression.

Voltaren Gel (generic diclofenac...RX in the US) is a great topical anti-inflammatory and can be very helpful. Just make sure the incision is completely healed (usually 4-6 weeks) before applying directly to the scar. You will probably get some recommendations here on your post for other natural treatments or topical anti-itch creams which may soothe the skin surface but not really affect the deeper nerves causing the sensation. Everything is trial and error.

Again...this is temporary and fades with time. How much time no one can tell you as we all heal differently.

my surgeon told me to keep creams and lotions off my scar area...i think it was good advice to prevent bacteria from creeping in. at 6-1/2 weeks PT is amazed how flat my scar is and how well it healed. something had to go well for me 😂...the rest of this process rather stinks

hi ricochet, my itching was so bad I couldn't stand it. My therapist suggested to use ice on it. it'll numb the area and cools it down. worked great for me.

I find putting cream on and massaging the leg helps.

I dont have a lot of pain but i hate nights when all the nerves in the leg come to life....feels like little pin pricks and i cant stand sheets on.

yup, just massage and deal w/it...it will go away and be replaced by yet another strange feeling. trying to get through this too. nothing pleasant so far in this process of healing.

I've had problems with itching after two operations where prostheses were used and found the best treatment was to take antihistamine tablets and/or use antihistamine cream.

Im 10 weeks in and have it to . Worse when my knee gets hot , which us most of the time. The whole area is also super sensitive - I cant bear jeans, bedding, tights etc near it.

Dr says itching is part of the healing process and gave me anti- his cream. I use epsom salts in bath and icepacks when resting which help. Suggest ask Dr for something to stop u from scratching .

What t has surprised me with my replacement TKR is that i have been able to wear jeans at two weeks. With the 2nd incision in 10months i think most of the nerves on the knee are dead. They only come to life at bed time.
