Knee/leg pain

I have had leg, feet general pain for a while on and off. I also have problems with my back so put it down to that. But lately one knee has got so painful i had to go to doctors. I had been away and done alot of walking to the pain was horrible. It is swollen around knee cap, doctor sent me for xray and give me stronger painkillers but had to come off them as they upset my stomach. GP said probably cartilage, but does cartilage hurt all the time? It pains all day and night, but worst when i put weight on it or straight it? Any advice waiting for xray result and still trying to work!

Thanks rocky31676, it is osteoarthritis. Obviously at 41 years old they can't do anything it's just a case of managing it. But the anti inflammatory tablets they gave me have upset my stomach so had to come off them and double omprezole for a month as I have gastritis ( inflammation of the stomach lining)
