Knee locking

Hi,

During my late teens through to my early thirties my left knee would lock. This was always when moving my leg from left to right when the leg was bent. The pain was excrutiating - if I were to describe it it felt like bone against bone if I tried to extend the leg (I know it's not possible but that's how it felt). The pain would be at the outer edge of the knee. A lot of hot towels and courage was required to keep moving my leg millimetres at a time until eventually I would feel something at the back of my knee 'come apart', then it was immediate relief. Apart from feeling a little stiff, I experienced no swelling or bruising afterwards. I never went down to the doctors as I thought it was part and parcel of a problem that I had had with my knee since my teens (Chrondomylacia Patella).

I am now in my early forties and my knee hasn't locked for approximately 8 years until several weeks ago when it happenend in the early hours of the morning when I turned over in bed. Unfortunately I had to call the Paramedics and after plenty of Gas & Air and 3 hours later it unlocked but this time the back of my knee was about 6 inches off the bed before it popped - normally it unlocks whilst still relatively bent. The thought of going through that again terrified me so I went to the Doctors.

I have had an MRI scan and was advised that the scan hadn't shown anything. I have to admit to feeling upset that nothing has shown that can be rectified to stop it happening again. I've now been 'dimissed' by the Doctor with no advice other than if it happens again they'll refer me and a full stop.

Has anyone else had/got a similar problem?

Any help/suggestions would be really appreciated.

Many thanks.

    Hi,

I know you posted this over a year ago but l just had to comment because you described this so well and it is exactly what I have been suffering with. I am in my mid 20's and my knee problems started when I was around 10. I remember waking up and reaching to the end of the bed (legs in awkward positions) and my knee popped for the first time. My mum took me to a & e and it was the most horrific drive ever. Every time I moved, just the tiniest bit, it was excruiacting pain. I'm posting because it happened today, first time in about 6 months I think. Sat on the floor with my leg crossed and I lent forwards and it went. I thought very quick and instead of sitting in pain I just quickly kicked my leg out and everyone in the room was so shocked at the noise it made. I went to the doctors a few years ago and had a scan but nothing. Never had any answers. My dad had key hole surgery on his knee to remove cartilage so may be linked to that. Sorry to hear you've had problems with yours but I'm happy I've finally found people who sound like they have the exact same issue.

I'm 43 yrs old. I remember my knee first locking for the first time ever when I was in the 4th grade (9 yrs ok??). I was sitting on the floor with my calves out to the side of my thighs ( you know, how EVERY 9 yr old sits on the floor). When I went to stand up, I couldn't. My knee was locked in place in THE WIRST position ever.I'm not sure how I got out of it, I probably just tried forcing it straight, which seemed impossible at the time. The pain was excruciating and it felt like it was bone on bone scraping. It's done it at least a few times a year since childhood. Scary when it happens in your sleep. Feels like you're sleeping on your side, kneecap relaxed and slides over. You're asleep, so you don't notice until you're straighting out your leg. In highschool I had an orthopedist look at it (no MRI), and tell me I had to strengthen the muscles around my knees by doing lunges. Well, it's several years later, the lunges did nothing. It's now doing it ( feeling like it's popping out), when I'm kneeling, squatting, sitting cross legged, or just move my leg quickly. It's the weirdest/WORST feeling I've ever experienced simply bc your reaction is PANIC, and " I NEED to straighten my leg!!!"After reading some of the entry's on this thread, it's actually reassuring to know this happens to other people and their leg doesn't just snap. Bc that's what feels like is happening.

*WORST, geez, not WIRST. How did that happen???

oh i find continuing your rotation (clockwise or counterclockwise) the way u got into the position or going back the way u came helps -it's different every time; i guess it depends what u did immediately before ur knee locked (i just move my knee veeerrrry slightly in different directions and find what hurts the least then go with that direction)

it will pop a bit every time i get back into normal position

it's so frustrating how doctors dont know what it is! They're all like, "oh HUNNEY, take some tylenol! DO stretches adn exercise more!" and then you do it and it doesnt help and they're all like *derp face*

OMG.... I thought I was the only one suffering from this excruciating knee pain while in bed especially!~

I had been diagnosed by my Orthopedic Dr. a few years back, after a little pain and an x-ray, with Osteoarthritis.  I had a series of injections, and I must say, it really helped for almost a year!

I was visiting my sister for a week out of town. While still in bed early one morning... I went to bend my leg that had been stretched out during the night.  As I proceeded to bend my leg..... I felt a pain I have NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE!!!

I returned home and thought it was just a freak event until it started  happening again and again and again!! This is not just an achy knee that you associate with arthritis, this is like someone has hit your knee with a sledge hammer sort of pain that I put right up there with child birth!!

I have since had an MRI which found , not only am I bone on bone, but my Meniscus is all but gone. I will require a partial knee replacement. Something I was trying to avoid like the plague but there comes a time when you can not bear the the pain any longer and it's ruining your entire life!!!

I would have another MRI and insist that the pain you are experiencing is not normal. Go to a different facility if need be or seek help from another Orthopedic Dr. that takes you seriously!

I pray that you will get the help you need because believe me... I'm feeling your pain, waiting on my surgery!

hI I'm 21 years old and have been having this issue in both knees multiple times, each time it has happened have been when I have turned over in bed and held my knee strange! I've had multiple MRI scans I've had crutches even leg braces sometimes! Sometimes it's so painful the gas and air won't work so I'm on morphine before they can even move me from bed! The hospital have never been able to straighten my leg into place so I'm usually unable to move my bent knee for up to at least two weeks, when it finally does go it makes An awful pop and the relief is crazy! The last time it happened I was just too scared to move so massaged the muscle around my leg for a good hour or two just stopping the cramps as much as I could, I then had a friend massage under my leg while slowly moving my lower leg side to side! After a couple of minuites my leg seemed to slide into place! Making a pop that usually takes weeks when trying the straightening method!

It might not work for everyone but up to now I have had no issue and I was able to walk about half an hour after it popped back!

I'm so glad that I found this post! I'm currently experiencing an episode with my knee and haven't been able to get it to "pop" back into place. It's been like this since yesterday afternoon. I initially went to urgent care where the Dr. couldn't get it to reset and referred me to Ortho. Went to my appt. this afternoon and was made to feel like I was faking or being over dramatic. He said he couldn't perform a good exam because I was too defensive with my leg. X-rays showed no issues, which didn't surprise me but I'm hoping an MRI tomorrow will since it's still not back to normal. I had ACL reconstruction at 16 and am currently 36. I've experienced these episodes over the last 20 years but have always been able to get it back into place by straightening my leg. It would always return to normal with a loud thud that could be heard by others. Hope I get some answers in the next few days.

      Hi Christi25598,

Try massaging the back side of your knee. The part that folds. I know it sounds crazy, but it worked for me. If not, also try bending your knee as far as you can and it might click back into place- this worked for my sister. Good luck. I know its excrutiating!

Christi! Please tell me you've found a solution?!

I'm sitting here in my room currently u able to get my knee back in place. My story is the same as yours. Any tips or tricks would be so helpful! I just want my knee back

When this happens to me, I massage the muscles behind my knee while a friend or doctor holds my foot and slowly moves my leg from side to side while bringing it down! It feels strange at first but it allows the leg to find its original position and it will pop after I relax

When you say hold your foot and move side to side, is your leg up in the air. Like at a 90 degree angle while you lay on your back?

Good luck I understand how painful and frustrating it can be! Just do what feels comftable after a while of trying that technique I started to feel my leg relax and that's when it popped! It took about 20 minuites or so but it was so worth it!

Mine has been locked for hours. When I was a kid it popped right back no problem

I do it by sitting up on the floor with my knee Bent at 90 degree angle and I kind of hold my leg up with one hand while massaging it with another and the person sits in front of me moving my leg side to side slowly

I hope it works for you it's so hard to describe I usually massage at the same rhythm as the movement side to side to distract myself from the pain I think that usually helps a lot

I've gotten it loosened up good enough to where it's not super painful anymore just annoying/throbbing sensation behind the knee and on the outside of the knee. Tried your technique but not quite getting it. Should my partner "jiggle" my leg? Or move it in long side to side motions? Haha sorry this is a stupid conversation but it has never locked this severely and I'm desperate lol!

Long side to side motions is why worked for me it took me a while to get the hang of I think but go with how you feel is working best for you I knew it was working for me as I could feel my leg slowly gliding with her hands

Thanks Abbie! I promise to return once this is resolved! The world needs people like you!

I was locked up 8 days this past time. I have a meniscus tear which is what the DR. thinks was in the way. A cortisone shot helped but that was after days of pain. Not sure I have anything for you other than what I usually do which is to extend my leg until its almost hyper extended. It will usually pop back into place at that point. Hope you get some relief soon!

Thank you Christi! Trying the knee extending thing but at a certain point I'm afraid to go further. Might just have to bite down and try it. Thanks for the reply and well wishes!

Abbie!!! I got it! I'm posting my solution here so others can find it.

Okay guys please if you're having this problem stop and read!

My knee has been "locked" for almost 12 hours and after going through tons of techniques and everyone's posts I finally got my knee unlocked.

      How I did it:

1: sit upright on the floor with your "good" leg out straight.

2: take your bad leg and bend it into your groin. The heel of your bad leg should go into your crotch and the knee will point outwards making the #4 with your legs.

3: flex all of the muscles that you can in your bad leg. Squeeze them really hard. I even pressed my bad knee into the ground a little bit.

4: keep your leg in this position but SLOWLY extend your knee. You should be dragging the outside of your foot on the ground as you straighten it.

You might feel a few small pops but if everything went well the pain will almost immediately subside.

You have no idea how thankful I am for this thread. Finally after 12 hours my leg feels better.

Best of luck to you all!
