What is your knee made out of?

Mine is Stryker Triathlon made of chrome with cement bonding and I had it done on the NHS at a private hospital. Lot of pain.

Is there such thing as having a metal allergy test done prior? What if you have a new installed knee and then have some sort of reaction to the material?

Dunno but thats interesting. Ive had a recurring rash since my surgery. It responds to cream but I am seeing a skin specialist on 11th April. I DID ask the surgeon whether this could be the case and he said "ALMOST unheard of. No" But the cynic in me thinks he would say that wouldnt he?

I know they don't tell you that - they should do a test to see if you're allergic to the metal. Remember years later it came out about people were allergic to the Mercury dental fillings?

I had a rash also on the back of my knee but he said it was the blood thinning injections. I think it was a reaction to the knee but they won't commit.

You should know before you have the operation if you have a metal allergy. It is to do with the nickel content.  It is up to you to tell the consultant if you are allergic

If you were allergic to the knee, the pain would be inside and not present as a rash on the outside.  There is a difference.  your rash could be due to anything, could even be the cream you are using, it could also be down to perspiration.

It could well be the healing process as that is not unusual. Just as nerve end healing can cause all type of sharp pains that come and go different people have different issues. Often times there will be side and drainage and a sticking feeling in the skin and this can be stitches working their way to the surface. Again nothing to worry about as long as you don't apply any oils or creams to them that could work it's way down and cause an infection.

Nohing if there is any drainage at all. The oils might help heal but that aren't sterile.

As much as none of the Drs will tell you, much of the decision making is on the basis of who is calling on them and selling the product. My 1st time around nearly 12 years ago the sales rep was actually in the operating room assisting the ortho with measuring and picking the correct prosthesis (with my permission of course). The last 2 times, in a different facility, a teaching university hospital where they have all the options sitting on a rack at the surgeons discretion, a complete different design by a different company. Every company says their design and material is the ultimate, every surgeon is supposedly the best and every facility the most advanced in the entire area. Personally, I take so much of that with a grain of salt. You have to trust your first line of defense, the surgeon. If you like him/her much of your battle is over. As far as the prosthesis, in the years since my 1st go round, I have seen or heard or read so much of the progress reports and anything that exaggerates those points beyond my nature as a skeptic, I immediately discard as hype. Human nature tells us everything and everyone can't be the best altough they certainly can be equals. My 1st failure had nothing to do with the joint it was my own problem, PVNS, that caused it to go bad. My 2nd failure wasn't the prosthesis either, it was a self distributed staph (epistaph) that created the problem. I'm now on my 3rd prosthesis and after 9 months I am working hard to regain strength. After 11 surgeries on the leg its about on the same par as a new born calf only with the pain of the 1st 13 weeks after the tkr. I've been told I will be 2 years getting strength ( I've been 115/0 ROM for several months). I've also been told I'll have residual pain the rest of my life........to the point of needing opiate pain meds. I just feel like we have to take the advice of our medical team and hope they will stick with us. Don't try and rely too heavily on what others have as that may not be the best for you. I do feel sorry for people who are stuck with surgeons that play God and forget about the suffering that goes with this surgery.
