Knee manipulation

Hi everyone I'm new on here but have been regularly reading the discussions ,which have helped me a lot . November 1st I had a full knee replacement  8 weeks later I still wasn't getting the bend I should of been getting ,went to see surgeon who wasn't to worried and told me to carry doing what I was doing exercises, pain relief and ice which I did  , 4 months later I still wasn't getting it think it was around 80degrees and still quite a lot of pain ,by this time I had finished with the physio at the hospital and was on a waiting list to see the NHS physio , I felt I was wasting time so I got a private physio who was helping me to try and get the bend ,

my routine appointment came for me to see the surgeon after about 14 weeks post op

he took one look and said he would manipulate it but no guarantees .

I had the manipulation with spinal eperdural the. Surgeon said he got a 40 degree better bend and said it was really well worth doing it , afterwards I went on the CPM machine for 45hours constant which was terribly uncomfortable,And was then allowed home with pain relief  ,what I'm asking is if anyone has experienced this it has been a lot more painfull than the knee replacement

im now back on crutches the pains terrible and I'm now 11 days after the manipulation ,

i have seen the physio since and he said my bend is measuring 90degrees now and to keep up with the exercises ,I am so fed up with the whole experience I feel it's never going to be right

I have up and down days but still having a lot of pain and still struggling to get this dreaded bend .

sorry to have gone on so much but would just like to know if what I'm experiencing is normal

thankyou for listening x

Hi, I can’t answer your question entirely, my experience has differed slightly, but still fed up!    I also have had a long battle with bend and stiffness around the knee. Had my TKR in September, after months of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy I had a manipulation under anaesthetic in February.  Apparently he got it to 135 and I was 90-100 before. However, I can only get it to 120 now and that is after being put through my paces by the physiotherapist. She says it probably won’t improve until the swelling goes down.  I have a lot of pain at night and it is very stiff.

So you are definitely not on your own!  There are a lot of us fed up, doing our exercises religiously and don’t seem to be getting far.  All I can say is keep going...I’m sure it will improve for both of us. Good luck to you. Sharon

so sorry. i was 7 weeks post op yesterday, went to PT today and finally went around the bike cycle all the way around...  it has been a struggle, but i was damned and determined to do it today!!!!   My patience were wearing thin.   I hope you do better.  all I can say , is, work through the pain.  I cry, scream moan and groan at home and in the public PT gym, but I don't care !!!

    Thankyou for your replys

Sarah did you have a lot of pain after the manipulation, I feel I'm right back to the beginning as regards to pain again ,I'm back on the crutches and not driving again the exercises are painfull

my knee is sore but to be fair the most of the pain I'm having is in my thigh calf and ankle

which I think could of been the use of the CPM machine  for 45 hours ,being on it for such along time .

but feel now 12 days afterwards should be better .

must say tho I actually did a full rotation of my static bike a couple of days ago and how good did that feel , I haven't done it since due to the pain I had the next day but I'm going to try again today

Il think my family have had enough of me constantly talking about this knee

which has turned out to be so much harder than I ever thought it would be.

I really want to start back to work ,walk my dog and enjoy the feeling of having a new knee

instead of pain exercising ice and pain relief

    thanks for listening again x

Hi Debbie, I was only put on a cpm machine for about 5 hours after operation as I was a day case so maybe that’s why your pain is different. Don’t worry about moaning about your knee, my family & colleagues are definitely fed up with it!  I have to say it sounds like you have had it hard, I was driving pretty much straight away and only on crutches for a couple of days and my pain was around knee but was definitely muscle/soft tissue pain where he had bent it.! Hope you have less pain soon! Sharon x
