Knee No. 2 on the way.

I am not doing too bad with knee No. 1 but Knee No.2 has given up the ghost. I can't walk without it being strapped and painkillers, and even then not pain free. I saw my GP on Tuesday this week and he gave Knee No. 2 a good examination and could hear the crunching and grinding. I also have the Baker's cyst on this knee and to be honest the deterioration of this knee is holding back my progress with knee No. 1. Anyhow, my GP booked me in for an Xray and said he would write to my GP. This doc doesn't mess around! I rang the Xray dept of my local hospital a couple of hours later (UK) and yep he had booked it! I could go when I liked within the next 14days. So I went straight away. Also yesterday I rang the private hospital where my Consultant is and yes they had already received the referral from my GP! Wow! My appointment with the consultant is on Monday 14th so only just over a week to wait.

I have to say I am very nervous. Yes I know what to expect as I have had it done before...... I can still remember the pain and suffering!

Also I am really pleased with knee No. 1. Considering being let down by Knee No. 2, I am 20 weeks post op with knee No 1 and I am up to 98 degree bend and counting. biggrin

I'm scheduled for a double TKR with "be spoken" components that are being made after a CT scan was done of my knees to ankles. My surgeon promises these will be better than off the shelf but from reading your comments, now I'm wondering. This week they called to delay my surgery another 2 weeks because the components won't be finished in time. My surgeon said the be spoken components are turning him from a surgeon into a technician.

Well for a start you are a brave cookie having them done at the same time.  I had the pleasure of waking up in the middle of my last one.  It took them a while to realise I was watching.  The saw, the hammer, filing thing were all there on show, technician.. mmmm, carpenter comes to mind.  Thank goodness I wasn't feeling what they were doing.  Just think of the delay as them fine tuning things

Yes, mine was made in the U.S.A.  I think the lead time is about 6 weeks, but as I had a date in mind, I had the MRI there and then and he texted the details across.

How are your component knees doing?  The surgery is supposed to be faster, with less blood loss and better alignment.  My fingers are crossed as I'm a wimp and have a hip replacement coming up after this.  My parents are 91 and 94.  They gave me lousy joints but I'm hoping for their terrific longevity.

My first knee was off-the-shelf.  I had to have an MUA a few months after (as it got to the stage where I couldn't straighten it).  Started to mark real progress after that and really good now.  My second knee was bespoke, was painful from waking up in recovery and pain continued. I also lost more blood and had it transfused back in. Had a good bend to start with, but started to stiffen and couldn't straighten at about the 4-5 month stage.  Had an MUA, but didn't not straighten it, so back into hospital in 2 week's time to have it opened up again.

I go in October 9th for my second knee. I know what you mean about the crunching and grinding.

My SURGICAL KNEE became my "GOOD knee" about six weeks post op. My SURGICAL "knee-to-be" causes A LOT of trouble, makes PT with the other one very difficult, and just plain HURTS!

I cannot wait to get it done!

Of course I am DEFINITELY NOT looking forward to those first VERY trying days, the drains, the bedpans, the nausea, the PAIN!

I AM looking forward to at least having a CHANCE at a somewhat normal life, though, so it is ON TO SURGERY for me!

Wishing you success as YOU head to YOUR big event!

I saw the consultant yesterday and he showed me the x-ray. Yes left knee needs replacing. His first free space is 12th October, he is going to see what he can do to bring it forward if possible. Not long now. Maximum of 4 weeks to wait. At least I know what to expect and I know there is light at the end of the tunnel.

That's really good news Elaine, 4 weeks will fly by and you'll be done before you know it! And 2 and a half weeks before I get mine done, bet you're pleased it's not a long wait.

      Here's to our new knees!

I have received confirmation of my TKR date. The consultant has managed to bring it forward a bit to 8th October. My Pre-op assessment is on Monday. All systems go now.

Great news Elaine, exactly 3 weeks before me. Now I'm over 6 months post op on the first one, 3 weeks seems like no time at all.......ive been reading back at old posts tonight and 3 weeks is a looooong time in TKR days!!

If we don't chat again before Saturday (holiday, yippee😆) then all the very best to you, and I hope all goes well for you xx
