Make an appointment with a good physio. Then another with an orthopaedic surgeon who may be able to "clean up" any chipped or damaged cartilage. The physio may give you exercises to strengthen relevant muscles although as a dancer you may be strong in quads and hamstrings. Seek best professional assistance. Older dancers opinions on medicos?

Hannah, I was a 66 year old groundskeeper and would wear a heavy leaf blower backpack and woul climb 3 flights of stairs on the outside of a commercial building every morning for months until I tore the meniscus in my right knee. I had an orthoscopy performed on my knee and it was determined that all the cartilage had been broken up in my knee. The pictures looked like a snow globe after it’s shaken. I went back to work after 6 weeks and for months the pain increased and I came to the point where I could no longer walk without severe limp and constant pain. My surgeon said at  that point I needed a partial knee replacement since my bones were strong and was told I could heal more rapidly than after a tkr so that I could return to work in a few short weeks . Will see him week after next on my 9th week and a determination will be made then as to whether I can return to work. It has been a slow painful recovery for me . My dad had a tkr at 75 after a 500 lb. cotton bale had injured him in high school after falling on his leg . He limited and was bow legged until after the surgery . He was in hospital for two weeks and I don’t think he ever did any physical therapy unless he did a few basic exercises at home . After a few months when he started walking I could not catch up with him. It was miraculous for him.
