Knee pain pre -op a THR

I am probably being over anxious, but as a really active person, who has worn out their hip with 25 years of salsa dancing, triathlon, running and cycling I am keen to get back into an active lifestyle after my left THR (19 day and counting!), . I have developed knee pain on the left side with horrid clunking. My GP says its its probably degenerative meniscus - becoming more apparent due to my changed gait, resulting from my now bone on bone hip joint. She reckons it should settle post op. The pain in my knee is almost as bad as the pain in my hip! has anyone else experienced this pre-op?

That's a relief - thanks Steve so good to hear you've had a good outcome and that your knee pain disappeared. Puts my mind at rest.

Hi I have knee pain which I consider to be worse than the hip pain but I'm told it's actually referred from the hip, not long now and it will be pain free for you, ice the knee as well as the hip and if you can try some vol ta rol

I had arthroscopic surgery to both knees prior to thr for both hips. I had torn meniscus and arthritis in both knees. The bad hips just added to a painful situation. My ortho doc said it would improve the outcome. It did. I had mri done to either knees followed by arthroscopic surgery prior to thr.
Yes pain can be referred. But if your knees are in bad shape nothing will change that.
I am now completely pain free and back to an active lifestyle.
Having a mri done hurts nothing and assures to find out what really is happening.

Hi yes I have got really bad knee pain cracking away, but worried because it's my left leg and that's the leg in having the new hip on, I might ask if they could do something for my knee while I'm under the knife. Hopeful they will x_ray , my knee before hip op. Might be lucky, anyway hip you make a speedy recovery. All the best..😃😃

I was similarly active before my I started getting increasingly bad knee pain and subsequent limp. Had no hip pain at all. Following MRI of knee which showed very minor meniscus tear which consultant said not be the cause of my lack of range of movement and pain, he did a pelvic x-ray to look at hips and saw left was bone on bone. Only answer a LTHR. That was 2.5yr ago, no pain in knee since day 1 and hips all fine. Like others, I ditched running but cycle and walk a lot.
So yes referred pain is real and I hope will soon but solved by your op.
Take care, follow the exercises and be patient with your progress to get it right for the long term.
