Knee Problem

My old dad fell with a motorbike on a rainy season about 5 or 6 months ago. The bike lay on his knee and since then he has been suffering from the knee problem, limping and unable to walk well. He experiences sharp pains and numbness especially at night and after working for a whole day. He has sought medication from various hospitals but nothing is forthcoming. An x-ray shows no dislocation. I feel that he is gradually becoming paralyzed because the knee condition is deteriorating by day. I thus seek professional advice on this. Should he consult an orthopedic or a neurologist?

How terrible for your dad! My father suffered a similar injury when he was in the Army many many years ago. All the doctors told him he would never be able to walk and stand for long periods of time again. He had numerous fractures in one leg and knee. Once the fractures healed he had surgery to repair ligaments.

To regain mobility he had intense physio sessions. Today he is in great shape and can outrun the best of us! He certainly proved the doctors wrong.

I think you should get your dad to a GP and get him to refer you to a specialist before his pain and leg get any worse. It would be hard to get any medication from a pharmacy or hospital if they don't have a proper diagnosis of what is causing his pain. Pain killers are addictive and only mask the pain rather than heal it. If his leg/knee was dislocated he wouldn't be able to stand on it at all.

In the meantime, get your dad to stay of his feet as much as possible as that will give his leg a chance to heal.

Thanks Jcat for the advice. We have consulted many GPs but they want to treat him with painkillers. I now want to consult a private practitioner. Do i go for an orthopedic or a neurologist?

What is causing the numbness. Is it a nerve issue or ligaments issue.

Sorry Sherry, I'm not a medical professional so I can't advice you on who to see.

However, I did find this link https://patient.info/doctor/Walking-Difficulty-and-Off-Legs-in-Adults.htm which may be useful to help you decide which specialist to see.

I am surprised that the GPs you have seen are only treating him with painkillers and haven't sent him in for a referal. Sometimes people are not completely honest  with their GP's about what had happened to them. Thus getting an inaccurate diagnosis and prescription.

The numbness you mention is not a very good sign at all and to me indicates there is damge to his nerves. Do see someone asap before the problem gets worse!

    Good luck!
