knee replacement

I'm 11 weeks post op tomorrow! I still can't walk very far and can only go up and downstairs one at a time! I have continuous broken sleep so permanently tired! Leg aches in bed but generally only take paracetamol. Is anyone else similar just want some normality? Back to work a week on Monday

    Hello again,

you say you work for the NHS so you're in the UK right?  I worked for Queensland Health in Australia.  I was a Support Worker for 10yrs, pushing people on beds back and forth from the ward to theatre and vice versa.  Wore my poor knees out.  The health dept. was very understanding really.  I guess they didn't want a law suite lol.  I tore my meniscus in my right knee pushing someone huge around a corner.  I just felt a snap.  It was awful pain but I worked through it and sorta got use to it.  Then it started locking on me where I couldn't move.  Working in the system, I was able to get it fixed through an anthroscopy.  I developed a blood clot, got over that, back to work and restore the knee again.  They ended up retiring me.  all that time, I was wearing out my knees.  They kept telling me I was too young for the operation so I've waited 4yrs for them to be fixed.  They did both at the same time and I thought I would die.  The pain was terrible.  They got me up and out of bed the same day as op.  One of my knees haemorrhaged.  I was given a blood transfusion and they over loaded me.  I couldn't breath.  They drained my lungs but they both collapsed and I got hospital pneumonia.  I had a fever for 8 days so they were worried my knees were infected but it was my chest thank god.  After all this, I was determined to get through it all.  I went to rehab for 4 days.  I walked into their gym on a huge walking frame and out an hour later with a stick.  I cut out crutches altogether.  I left hospital with no aides.  I knew I had 14 steps up to my flat waiting for me at home, so I had practiced on the gym little steps.

as I've said, I walk down one at a time with both feet on the one step.  I just can't put one in front of the other and it's been 11 weeks now.  You and I and all members of this " club" are different. We will recover differently.  Please don't feel your failing or are behind in any way.  You're doing really well.  I think you should speak to your doctor about better pain meds.  You need your sleep especially when you're back at work.

    Be well, be happy.

I got rid of my crutches at 3 weeks which is what was expected but they really helped! I damaged my knee roller skating, I was put on skates at the age of 2 as my grandfather always owned skating rinks and my mum was a championship skater I didn't get that far lol! It's just good to know there are others who understand and at similar level to me!
