Sorry to tell you but you will have stiffness for quite a few months, just keep doing the exercises, you will have good days and bad.I have had both done the last done in June and still have stiffness some days it is early days yet. Don't get disheartened. Chin up. xxx

Yes, all sounds very normal to me. i am just 4 months post tkr on my right knee and so far so good. By 6 weeks i was walking unaided but it's still early days. If you feel you need the cane for stability and a feeling of safety, then use it. Have you tried taking a few steps unaided and gradually increasing?

Stiffness in the morning is very normal. I found that walking round the bedroom helped to ease it. i still get stiff after sitting for a length of time, particularly in the evenings when I'm usually sitting around more, reading, tv, etc. This can take a year - 18 months to finally disappear. Persevere, do your exercises and when you get despondent, just check into this site. Wishing you all the very best.

At almost 13 months out I still have stiffness although much decreased. It is a process that takes time. I know it is hard but try to be patient and keep doing your exercises and walk as much as you can daily.

It sounds pretty typical. i was walking indoors without a cane by 6 weeks, but used one outside still. Once I felt I could try without I used to carry it and just use it when I felt I needed to, if I felt I wasn't walking correctly as I tired, or if surfaces were uneven. If your wound has healed completely try wrapping the knee in clingfilm at night. It worked for me. Good luck!

Hi Claire, I'm at 9 weeks and still have stiffness and pain in the morning, but I notice that it takes less and less time to loosen up. Even getting up out of a chair after sitting a while it's stiff, but.not for long. We are told it gets better, so here's hoping. What is your ROM?

    Good luck. Rosemary

Stiffness can last 12-18 months. It goes away very, very gradually. After a while, you start noticing it less and less. However, the key is keeping the knee active...even years post-op. This is a lifetime recovery. Sit around and do nothing? Your knee will start to stiffen up again. Do the work now to get it almost all gone in a year and stay active after that.
